He also says there is an Applied Bachelor of GIS through SAIT. Does anyone know anything about this program? Any opinions on what would be better, U of C or SAIT?
What do you think of this as a career in general?
Thanks!

I have worked in GIS for 14 years and love the field. I have a B.Sc in Geography from U of C but GIS wasn't a major focus when I was there. When hiring, candidates from SAIT are hit and miss... if he really wants to learn GIS send him to COGS after he gets his undergrad degree http://www.cogs.ns.ca/, he will be pretty much guaranteed a job on graduation from there. U of L has an very good GIS program as well.
If you or him have any questions feel free to PM me and I'll be more than happy to answer them.

It is a pretty exciting field in terms of future potential. There is so much information out there that knowledgeable users can manipulate as they want and it is growing at a huge rate.
Our company has a GIS department that focuses mainly on mapping but is expanding into all areas of data management.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. It sounds promising for him.
If you don't mind me asking, do you both work in oil and gas? Is that where most of the jobs would be for him?

I don't work in GIS, but it seems like the majority of GIS jobs in Alberta would either be in o&g or government (e.g. EMS, police, municipal gov't)

I'm an engineer at an o&g company, and we have added a few gis people lately, seems like interesting work that's in demand. Our environmental consulting firm has gis types also, iirc.

I am oil and gas as well.
Another option for your son to look into is Geomatics Engineering at U of C.
They have a pretty decent GIS component that can be coupled with a lot of different options.

I'm in environmental consulting and do work for both O&G and power lines... lots of opportunities outside of those though.

EPCOR has a GIS department as well. The users generate the as-builts, but also play a large role in asset management. There's just too much data to ignore, it can prove to be incredibly useful. I've hired about 10 GIS people over the last 2 years. Plus, it pays pretty decent, topping out at about $44/hr.

Thanks again for all the input.
V, the GIS people you hired would they have had a BSc degree or some other designation?

The talk amongst my sons friends is that the Engineering programs are very difficult to get in to right now. He thinks the average mark is over 90%. His average in grade 11 is about 82 to 85%. He doesn't think he would get into Engineering with those kind of marks.

I was a GIS graduate in 1995. The sky is the limit in this field, seriously. Many companies have no idea what they are missing.

So, here we are 5 years later! And a completely different economic / career situation in Alberta. Son will be graduating in December with a BSc in Geography and has completed all the GIS courses the U of C offers.
What do you think about the employment situation now for GIS in Alberta? Any opportunities for those just starting out?

He will be looking outside of Calgary if he can’t find anything here. His plan was to stay at home for a bit and save some money if he can as he is still pretty young (21).

Thanks! Can you wait until December just to make sure he passes his last term and actually gets his degree?
