The way I understand it it's pretty easy to get there though.

I would buy him out now. I'm maybe the least Brouwer-hating guy here, but he's not been good and I don't see him improving given the lack of ice time he's going to get. At least Lazar has potential upside because he's still young.

Insert <WhyNotBoth?.jpg> when arguing about whether to remove Brouwer or Lazar off the team.

Both have been pretty bad in their time in Calgary with very few bright spots.

Just playing best to worst players, top to bottom, with no preference made to who I would like to see playing with whom :

Gaudreau-Monahan-Neal
Tkachuk-Backlund-Lindholm
Bennett-Ryan-Czarnik
Frolik-Jankowski-Foo
Mangiapane

Gio-Brodie
Hanafin-Harmonic
Kulak-Stone
Andersson

Smith
Rittich

That just screams rolling four lines, to me. Andersson and Mangiapane are extras only because they are the most likely to push into the lineup.

I would also like the Flames to sign Lehner.

Then trade Brouwer and Gillies. That will be a solid off-season imo

Smith played fantastically well last year and you have to hope he can keep that up. And hopefully the ability and confidence of those backups is up a notch too.
They were also rookies. Can’t expect perfection from rookie goalies. There’s growing pains you have to live with if you wanna develop young NHLers especially in goal. I’d expect Rittich/Gillies to be more solid this season if Smith went down. I was really impressed with Gillies after he let in the weak goals each game. He would’ve got some wins if our offense hadn’t been so anemic

It’s not comfortable trusting the net to young goalies but it’s a necessary growing pain if you want to develop them. Playing them is part of the solution to the post-Smith Flames. We need to be developing them into potential starters for the year or two after.

The Flames have now added 4 forwards to the roster in the first 48 hours of free agency.

As bad as Brouwer is, he's twice as good as Lazar.

Even if Brouwer had a resurgence and started to earn a fraction of that contract, he isn't really needed anymore. I don't even know where he fits.

But I'm willing to let Treliving try to save some face with that 2nd round pick with Lazar. He makes very little money and at this point is not a burden. He's still a younger guy and missed almost an entire year of development, so maybe he has room to grow. Give him a chance in camp, if it becomes clear that he has been passed by, do the right thing for a good kid and try to find him a place to play.

He is a burden. He affects the play of his linemates. Slowing their development down.
And in turn thats a burden on the team as an entire line isnt playing well enough and costing us points and playoff revenues.

Time to cut your losses and play only those that contribute.
Doubtful Lazar gets lost on waivers too.

I would like to see Monahan and Gaudreau split up. We know what that pairing is capable of and can always go back to them. They'd still see pp time together. There is enough talent at the top end of our forward group that both of them would be playing with skill.

Gaudreau-Backlund-Neal
Tkachuk-Monahan-Lindholm
Bennett-Carter-Frolik
Xxx-Jankowski-Czarnik

My lines today:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal
Tkachuk - Backlund - Lindholm
Bennet - Jankowski - Frolik
Foo - Ryan - Czarnik
Dube/Mangianapane

That means Lazar and Brouwer are gone

I really like Frolik with Jankowski and Bennett.

What would you guys say to Rick Nash if he said you know what I have 1 more year left in me and the Flames were able to clear Frolik+Brouwer+Lazar up front?

Gaudreau ~ Monahan ~ Lindholm
Tkachuk ~ Backlund ~ Neal
Nash ~ Ryan ~ Bennett
Mangiapane ~ Jankowski ~ Czarnik
Foo, Hathaway

The talk of Maroon in the other thread (when he clearly isn't coming here now which I realize) just got me thinking of absolutely stacking a team. If Rick Nash was healthy and willing to join a deep forward group it would be crazy! That line-up could be absolutely murderous.

pretty stoked after the past 24 hours. I personally would like to see Bennett play with better players than what is being suggested by far. give him every opportunity to succeed, we need him to succeed. playing with Frolik or Janko aint going to do it. I think were going to see Peters change lines like toilet paper till he starts seeing some big chemistry, the good news is we have the player talent finally to do it.

This has been so much fun to watch, I'm really looking forward to the start of the season and what I'd personally like to see materialize;

Gaudreau / Monahan / Neal

-An absolute no brainer, finally have a true RW sniper to play with our two best offensive forwards

Tkachuk / Lindholm / Bennett

-A great tenacious forecheck with grit, skill & finish

Frolik / Backlund / Ryan

-A super responsible shut down third line that is also able to put the puck in the net

Lazar / Jankowski / Czarnik

-Loads of speed on the wing, youthful exuberance, size and hopefully some pop. They just need to go out there and have fun

Brouwer just has extra forward written all over him, he hasn't shown anything and he isn't going to. If Tre can't move him then he needs to be a good teammate and just collect his paycheck while eating popcorn.

Mangiapane, Foo & Dube don't need 4th line NHL minutes, they will still benifit from top AHL duty and will be recalled to fill in should a top six player get injured

Line A:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal

Line A acts much as it did last year with the clear upgrade of moving Neal in and Ferland out. Gaudreau and Monahan take a step forward with Neal being able to finish with a higher level of consistency than Ferly could.

Line B:
Bennett - Lindholm - Tkachuk

Line B acts a 2nd scoring line. Lindholm is our 2nd best face-off guy, and should play centre. Tkachuk playing on his off-wing in a more offensive role will work well. Bennett takes a step forward thanks to getting an opportunity with a new coach and the best line mates he's had in the NHL.

Line C:
Frolik - Backlund - Foo

Line C features Backs and Frolik continuing to act in a defensive role with Foo beating out Eatbread and Dube for the roster spot. Backs and Frolik have shown they can work with youth, and Foo being mentored by these two is a good way to start his NHL career.

Line D:
Jankowski - Ryan - Czarnik

Line D gives Jankowski and Ryan the ability to take face-offs on their strong sides while allowing Jankowski some breathing room as Ryan does the heavy lifting as the centre on the line. Czarnik adds offence to the line and makes this a very effective 5v5 line.

13th - 14th Forwards:
Lazar - Hathaway

Pairing A:
Giordano - Brodie

Pairing B:
Hanifin - Hamonic

Pairing C:
Kulak - Stone

Extra Defenceman:
Prout

Goalie A:
Smith

Goalie B:
Gillies

PP1:
Lindholm
Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal
Giordano

PP2:
Tkachuk
Czarnik - Ryan - Bennett/Jankowski/Backlund
Hanifin

PK1:
Backlund - Frolik
Giordano - Brodie

PK2:
Lindholm - Tkachuk
Hanifin - Hamonic

Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Mangiapane, Dube, Rittich, Parsons, Gawdin, Phillips, Shinkaruk, Klimchuk help build the Heat into a Calder Cup caliber team.

Wow. Just wow.

I'm having a hard time piecing together what the opening night roster will look like simply because of the depth, number of versatile forwards and the sheer excitement on what a player could look playing in different scenarios.

But my dream roster looks like this.

(1A) Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal
(2A) Tkachuk - Jankowski - Lindholm
(2B) Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
(4th) Mangiapane - Ryan - Czarnik
Lazar

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Andersson - Stone
Kulak

Smith
