I doubt he appeals and if he does, I doubt they lower the amount of games.
The league clearly established that they view this as a significant foul and worthy of a lengthy suspension.
I don't disagree either. Zero Tolerance for touching an official.

I take it then you are in the same league as the newspaper scribe, what position do you play in tiddlywinks. Use your head for something other than a resting place for a couple of ears!!

Don't touch ref's no matter what. That is the lesson learned here today with this stupid suspension.

I don't see why he wouldn't appeal if it was accidental, he has nothing to lose.
The issue is we have seen time and time again that the league doesn't have a zero tolerance for touching an official.
I know that someone has to be first to make an example of, but I still think they got this one wrong.

I'm guessing that he told them it was accidental and they either didnt believe him or dont care.

It's a screengrab. Individual frames from any video recording of a person's face will show expressions and facial movements that are far removed from the state of her/his mind at the time.
This is not evidence.

Yeah but what I meant was if he was being genuine that it was all an accident then why wouldn't he appeal?
If it was me and I didn't mean to do it then I would feel this was too long of a suspension and I would be appealing.

Part of the problem I have with it is not the actual suspension itself, but the lack of suspensions for other people who have pushed officials, punched officials and all that other stuff.
It's pretty black and white in the rule book, touching an official is a minimum of 10 games, whether intentional or not. However, that's never actually enforced.
On the same night as the Wideman incident, Milan Lucic punched a linesman in the face. No discussion of a suspension whatsoever.
The lack of consistency is what I find annoying. I'm not saying that Wideman should not have been suspended or that 20 games is too much. Where are the other ones.

I think everyone is just mad because the team lost two whipping boys today.
Who is everyone gonna blame when the team loses tonight?

I don't think anyone is arguing the zero tolerance. They pretty much had to suspend him. It's the 20 games and what that means in all contexts.

I agree, not to mention the $500+K.
But appeals also have PR repercussions. I'd probably appeal too if I felt I had any chance or if it was legitimately accidental.

Haha I actually love it because this is how real people discuss things. Not how they actually act on radio.

20 games is pretty harsh but clearly they thought it was intentional as did many others out there. It was a pretty dirty play and he's paying the price. I feel bad for him if it wasn't but I guess the NHL determined it was. It sucks he's going to lose a bunch of money but that's kind of his own doing.

I'd say you can guage what the league is thinking if you compare this suspension to the other ones.
They very obviously don't feel like Wideman's explanation is any good.
In fact, based on the length of the suspension alone and the fact that the didn't technically have to suspend him at all given no penalty on the play, it wouldn't surprise me if some people inside the league were calling for an even longer suspension.
I imagine it was made clear to Wideman that he's getting 20 games for a reason and that an appeal at this point might expose him and the flames to more PR problems.

Put it this way, if it was intentional I'd be totally cool with 20 games. No muss, no fuss, no problem. Totally legit.
I just honestly dont believe a veteran like Wideman after about 800 NHL games played all of sudden decided to randomly clock a linesman one day.
I'm relatively certain that he had no idea what the hell was going on and it was just a total accident.
