I agree. Last year was his first year as a pro and that is a big jump, it took some time for him to get comfortable. I think he will come into camp and make a big push this coming season.

He was a bit of an internet sensation when he was younger and was a Flames fan apparently.

He is also sort of like a Gaudreau player. Was seen as a high risk, high reward skilled player in his draft year. It's exciting that he is progressing to a point the risk seems less risky.

In all seriousness, there is a little more to it.

Now, I preface what I am about to say with a disclaimer: I am NOT comparing Pettersen to Johnny Gaudreau.

Having said that, Pettersen's first year in the NCAA certainly has a bit of Gaudreau nostalgia attached to it. He is a terrific playmaker who exploded into his college freshman season, and while he was one of the three youngest players on his team he was the #2 scorer at U Denver last year. I haven't watched a lot of him, but he sure looks great when I have seen him—poised with the puck, dynamic, shifty, strong on his feet and very smart.

Coming along is a fair way of putting it. I think that a few prospects are really growing into decent players. Its an outside chance for most of them, but that doesn't mean that they are busts. That said, there is another ledge around the 11/12 mark where those players would really be a surprise, but it has happened before.

Yeah I have a hard time placing Parsons but I agree with this list.

Top 4 feels clear.

Then I have a grouping of small but talented forwards that are tough to separate:

Phillips
Pettersen
Zavgorodniy
Koumontzis
Nikolaev
Sveningsson

Parsons probably fits somewhere in the top 10 still as well, and I like Pospisil's raw tool kit as well and he had a great year in the USHL even though he was a bit of an older prospect since he spent the extra year there.

Dube for me - he seems like a sure-fire NHLer with maybe 2nd line upside (and very high floor)

Kylington has lots of potential, but still has some uncertainty

I agree thats the grouping. You could probably add Tuulola to that list as well. While not a perfect prospect, he has been a consistent producer in the SM-Liiga with lots of play off experience. His size, and the fact that he is a right shot doesn't hurt either. But at 21, its a pretty decisive year for him.

I'm not sure what Koumontzis has done to be in that group? He seems to have limited upside...

I still think dube has first line upside. He reminds me so much of Langkow.

He goes about his business quietly.

I think the only thing that really held him back last year was size.

He had a pretty good first season in the NCAA, and even our GM called him out as one of the guys that impressed last year and in prospect camp this season.

I agree that he's probably closer to the bottom of that group (Phillips, Pettersen, and Zavgorodniy are a step ahead of the rest IMO) but his performance is pretty strong.

NHL equivalency for each of these guys last year:

Phillips - 23
Pettersen - 29
Zavgorodniy - 22
Koumontzis - 15 to 23 (played in an independent conference so tough to figure out exactly where it lands)

He was 6th in NCAA scoring in his age group last year ahead of Oliver Wahlstrom. He was invited to USA's WJC summer camp.

It's tough to call between Dube & Kylington. Dube I think has complimentary top 6 potential (can't take over the game and drive his own line but can probably be in the top six at some point in his career). Kylington could end up as high as a #2/3D. Thus, I think the potential is a wash but Kylington's probability is probably a bit lower than Dube getting to be a second line caliber player due to playing the more difficult position. However, at this point Kylington has shown more at the NHL level so he'll get my vote this round but they really are 2A/2B.

I was torn between him and Dube, I gave the edge to Dube just because he is further along on his development, but I think they are very similar in a lot of ways.

TJ Brodie? I think Kylington has more upside than Brodie ever did, but I also see this as a very realistic and achievable expectation for Kylington's future with the Flames.
