What did Ron ever do? I’m not defending him, I just didn’t know people disliked him.

As for Cherry, I find him entertaining and I think ultimately, that's his purpose. He doesn't add anything in terms of insight, but that's what I think the other panel is for. Cherry is excellent for laughs with his incoherent rambling and instances like the "bunch of jerks" are reasons enough for me to enjoy his segments.

Strachan played the heel role perfectly. His feud with Burke made great TV 20 years ago.
Burke, Strachan, MacLean, and Friege/Kipper would make for amazing intermission segments.

IIRC he also started the whole "it's not a question of if, but how many".

Don Cherry has been senile for years now. Ron Maclean has essentially had to babysit him on air, watching the clock and trying desperately to keep his segment on track.
Cherry should ride off into the sunset with some dignity still intact.

It is not necessarily a strong assumption. The reason for that, Sportsnet had a regional deal with the Habs even though the name of the Habs arena was the name of their arch rival, the Bell Centre.

Ron took over Dave Hodge's job back in 1987 when Hodge flipped his pen and people to this day think MacLean is inferior to Hodge.

I can’t recall the last time I actually watched or listened to any intermission segments. I usually just listen to music and read the synopsis on here. Thanks for that by the way.

Any chance we get the original HNIC theme song back with a new TV agreement?

Unlikely, unless Bell wins the NHL rights back. They hold the rights to the theme song in perpetuity.

Every day is a bad look for Simmons.
I wish I could say he's the worst sports journalist in Canada, but he just has so much competition. He probably wins for longevity of awfulness, though. He has been horrible from the very beginning.

I will say that as much as I didn't like Strachan he did provide for a contrarian view which was entertaining at times as he always had an axe to grind with someone and his expected negative slant was at least a different opinion. Annoying for sure but if you are looking at the intermissions as a means of entertainment maybe nice to have a guy like that at the table just to break up monotony of a bunch of nice guys discussing news and rumors.

We are hard on Francis at times but if he had egg on his face even half as much as Simmons I'm sure he would have been run out of town a long time ago. I don't understand how this guy still has a job in sports media but being out west it's probably something we don't understand seeing this is clearly a Toronto thing and someone in that market must like him for reasons unknown to me.

Big Oilers fan. Big ego. Bad takes and opinions (In 2015 said the Nordiques would be back in the NHL in three years and the Oilers would win the Stanley Cup in no more than four years.). That said Ron is a great talent that worked his way from doing Flames intermissions on 2&7 to where he is now but things went south for him when he felt he had become a big deal and started dominating the HNIC telecasts with his takes and opinions. He's a little better now and maybe it's me but I get a little tired of seeing the same people decades over decades on any show and I would be fine with him being replaced when Cherry eventually retires.

Anyone outside of the Flames region should be praying for Sportsnet to re-up the deal. Right now, the Flames have 38-40 national games but if they went to TSN, they'd be limited to only 20-22.

Don't forget, he got his start in Calgary with the Sun. He was pretty awful back then, too. For someone who covered a team that won as much as the Flames 80-89, he was very negative on the club.
