Free Guy was ok. Amazing first half but the second half dragged at times and didn’t quite live up to the awesome premise.
They didn’t develop the real world characters. I didn’t care about the non-Ryan Reynolds characters at all, the video game plot or the romance plot. I did care about Ryan Reynolds but as the movie progressed, they seemed to lose the tension over who we were supposed to care about.
Spoiler!
Was I supposed to care about their game success? Because I didn’t care at all about either of these characters. We had no connection to them or the hard work they out into their game.
What about the weird, last minute romance between the two? Came out of nowhere, made no sense and I didn’t care about it at all. More like he’s a creep who made her an AI stalker based on his own obsession. Felt like that Black Mirror episode with Todd from BB.
I spent the first half of the movie feeling for Ryan Reynolds and they just ditched that and went for the Grandma’s Boy storyline. Then, nope, it’s back to caring about Guy again.
They should have picked one goal and stuck with it. We spent the first 45 minutes getting to know Guy but then his survival as the first ever fully sentient AI character takes a back seat to their video game sales. Those goals feel completely at odds. Either AI are real people or their IP needs to be protected. Going for both seemed dumb.
Having just finished Westworld s3, there was some great potential to make a touching yet fun action comedy and instead they played it same by adding in the entire bad boss storyline, which I’ll mention again felt like a complete rehash of Grandmas Boy.
Or they should have totally abandoned the AI angle and gone for something more lighthearted, like having Guy save their code. But then it should have been the real world characters who got the character development so that we cared about their success.
Fun but ultimately wasted a ton of potential. 6/10

I watched it last night and I agree. Meh. I thought Ryan Reynolds acting was really over the top a lot of the time. I get that's the point in being an NPC but it kinda brought me out of it.
I liked Free Guy. Some cheesy parts for sure, but video games in general are cheesy so it was all in good fun. I thought the overall premise was neat, instead of the usual kind of "video game world" movies that get made. Was neat to see how the video game world and real world events interfaced with each other.
Also watched Malignant. It was decent, but I found it way over the top most of the time and way to forced. Good action though, especially the one massive murder scene.
I'm a Soprano's nut. It's my all time favorite show, I've watched it from start to finish many, many times and still do every couple of years or so.
Just watched The Many Saints of Newark and loved it. I could honestly watch an entire new series based around the same actors/characters and story line. I also thought they did an excellent job of casting the younger versions of characters I've watched so many times. James Gandolfini's son was excellent as well, in my opinion. Totally bought him as a young Tony, and Vera Farmiga was spot on as Livia Soprano.
I was upset when it ended because I wanted more. Then I went to wikipedia and read this:
Quote:
Chase has expressed interest in producing a sequel to The Many Saints of Newark that follows Tony Soprano in his 20s, provided he could collaborate with former Sopranos writer Terence Winter.[55] Upon hearing this, Winter replied he would do it "in a heartbeat. Absolutely.
Yes please, do it now!

We preferred in The Suicide Squad last night and loved it. Idiotic but good.
That was WAY better than I thought it was going to be. Gunn got the tone exactly right. Would've loved to have had Will Smith in it though, although Idris Elba looked like he had a great time.

Idris Elba>Will Smith. Not a fan of repurposing characters but Elba should be the next 007, not James Bond necessarily but a 007 agent. The guy is legit and has the accent.

Can't believe I'm saying the but Nicholas Cage's new movie PIG is pretty good, strange but good. As a person who can't stand Cage I can see him getting a nomination or two for his acting in this.

Interesting, I thought Many Saints was just kind of "ok". A mediocre movie kicked up a notch in enjoyment because it was basically a Sopranos theme park. I would still recommend anyone who watched the show (so basically everyone at this point?) to watch it, but I was kind of disappointed.
here's from just a couple of days ago, the oral history of the movie with almost everyone involved.
Pure Nostalgia: The Oral History of ‘That Thing You Do!’
Twenty-five years ago, Tom Hanks made his directorial debut with a charmer about a one-hit wonder that tugged at heartstrings and left everyone in the audience humming and tapping their toes
Scream factory released the first 5 Halloween movies on 4K today, so doing a franchise rewatch now. The first one is still so good, and really sets the template for other slasher films to follow in the 80s. I've never actually seen the sequel so looking forward to finally watching it.

We just watched Sinkhole, a Korean disaster comedy at VIFF tonight. It was amazing, but nik would probably call it derivative of Poseidon Adventure or something.

Yeah, I gotta see it. Thanks for reminding me. Tony Soprano has lived rent free in my head ever since the first time I watched it. Such an incredible character and performance. Feel like I know the guy.
Second favourite show for me though. Insert Family Guy "the Wire" joke here.

The Craig Bond finale was great and Ana de Armas is breathtaking (you will be enticed to leave your spouse right then and there fellas).
Even Lea Seydoux in a certain scene..okay I'll stop.
Best since Casino Royale for me, although Skyfall has the best third act of this Bond era.
Ties in previous installments nicely, and feels like a tidy conclusion to a larger story arc.
Just wish they fleshed out the villain's story and motivation a little more, which was the drawback of the last one too, but not the worst example of this over the course of these films. Malek certainly does about as well as he can with what is written for him.
Will scratch that itch for Bond fans. Fastest 3 hours ever.
Now I am le sad.
