That's my point. College UFA's are a special breed. They play their first pro game at 22-23 years old. There is an adjustment period regardless of if your 19 or 23. One pro season is too soon to declare someone a tweener.

Hathaway seemed to be the model of consistency on that AHL squad. I'm not declaring him NHL caliber, but i've seen him make and finish some great plays so I'm not willing to write him off yet.

It's not like the Flames of old had drafted many NCAA players or signed NCAA UFA's. Things seem to be working out for the Flames ever since they joined the NCAA train.

College UFA's aren't new. Maybe here, but not elsewhere. There's still history enough to not be as optimistic as other prospects. I'm by no means writing him off, just saying in my view, there's more valuable prospects out there

It's a new thing for Calgary as my post indicated. The Flames have as much or more NCAA scouts as any other team in the league now. We have signed some quality UFA's since then.

I'm not saying you have to be optimistic, but you did in fact write him off. You called him a career tweener after all.. And if he spends next year in the AHL you are probably right. 1 pro season is not really giving him a chance though. A productive season no less.
