Default How long until Kiprusoff's jersey is retired?

The jersey number thread piqued my interest on this.

I understand Jarome's number retirement will likely be after he has retired from the league, but Kiprusoff retired in 2013.

I don't really have a frame of reference on this as I've never really paid attention to retirement timing, but is it standard to wait a few years before retiring player's numbers?

I guess I'm just not sure what the benefit is in waiting a bunch of years when he's clearly one of the most important players in club history. On a selfish level I'd just like to see the ceremony.

And hopefully they fully retire his number and skip the cheesy 'honor a Flame' or whatever it is.

I doubt the number gets retired, like you said it'll be the cheesy Honor a Flame

From now on, everyone will be a Forever a Flame.

Fleury will likely be finally honored this coming season (Ken King basically said as much at the STH event in June). They probably won't do two in consecutive seasons, so I wouldn't expect Kipper to get done until 2017-18, but that will likely be when Iginla gets honored (assuming he retires at the end of his current contract).

So, probably 2019-20 at the earliest for Kipper.

Don't buy it.

Kipper and Iggy will have their numbers retired.

I really expect (and hope) that they retire #34 along with #12.
I can understand Fleury being honoured with the forever a flame thing, but not for Kipper and Iginla

They better, and hopefully Treliving corrects this dumb policy just like he did for the number situation

Yeah, I've tried to be open to the "Forever a Flame" idea...but no. It's just dumb. Either retire the number or don't.

Are you serious? Theo is one of the best players to ever don the Flaming C. His number deserves to be retired WELL before Kipper's.

Unfortunately, his stock goes down in many fan's eyes due to his struggles with sexual abuse. If it was up to me he'd have had his number retired years ago.

12, 14, 34 should all eventually be retired. Those 3 deserve the honor!

If they don't retire 34 then they should just take down the two other banners

Please tell me you meant to write drug abuse.

Agreed though, #14 and #12 deserve to be retired. #30 did not.

Drug addiction was part of his struggles with sexual abuse.

Him being abused is not why his number isn't retired. Him taking digs at the franchise again and again, even after being given many second changes by the ownership/management, is. I bet he's pissed off more than a few owners over the years.

14 will never be worn by another Flame, nor will 34 and 12.

However they choose to do it, the above sentence will not change.

As for Kipper, I'd be fine with 2016/17. Fleury can be honoured this year, as was Maher last year and Nieuwendyk the year before.

Yeah, that's not a very fair comment flameswin.

Based on playing accomplishments sure... but Theo never crossed a bridge that he didn't burn afterwards and to be blunt I've never met anyone who has had any interaction with him (outside of fan events) that came away thinking highly of him. That stuff get's in the way of honors. I mean Theo should probably be in the HoF based on his on ice accomplishments so I think he should... but I have doubts about if he will.

His numbers are very very impressive no doubt. But he has burnt his fair share of bridges with the organization. There is a reason why his number has not been retired or honoured yet.

I do respect him as a great hockey player and also for all that he went through personally. I didn't say I do not want his number to be retired. I said I can understand if it will not be retired and is only honoured.

Iggy I think will eventually be retired, Kipper Forever a Flame, and Fleury nothing because he'll expect a full retirement and won't accept anything less.

Kiprusoff and Iginla were dominant players in their prime, bringing home individual hardware. Fleury was a bit player on a Stanley Cup team (Al MacInnis, the guy that won the Conn Smythe didn't get his number retired).

34 and 12 are far more likely to hit the rafters than 14.
