Mangiapane is just like 99% of NHL players that once they get paid the old effort just can’t be found anymore. Dude made his money and now just wants to coast around. Very disappointing but not surprising. He should be healthy scratched or even waived if it gets bad enough since nobody will take him and it’ll free up salary cap.

I bet any money Phillips would be a far more impactful player right now (no question actually, since he will, ya know, try).

I never jump to an effort issue.

What have we seen from Andrew Mangiapane in the past would make us think the guy would get paid and just mail it in? Don't see it at all.

Far more likely that he's feeling pressure from the new deal and is pressing. Wouldn't be the first time.

That's likely what he is though. I thought that last year, and now I'm not sure he's going to consistently be that good.

I do like him as a player so hopefully this is just a blip..

Wow rough game for the Flames, Penguins had lots and lots of really good scoring chances.

Vladar was awesome, definitely stole 1 point

Missed the game. Very confusing PGT as to whether they played well or not lol

99% of NHLers stop trying once they sign a new contract?

They did. Penguins are playing well, but the game was pretty even in terms of possession/shots.

Flames had some defensive breakdowns (in the third especially) and thus Vladar had to be sharp. A couple breakaways and in tight golden opportunities.

But the pace was high, and the crowd was raucous. After a call on Pittsburgh late the fans booed our entire powerplay and cheered every clear (which was a lot because the PP was putrid).

I think it's rarer for a player after signing his first big money contract to actually perform equal to or greater than his previous seasons efforts that garnered the contract he earned.

I don't think it's 99 percent but it's darned high, likely has a lot to do psychologically with self imposed pressure to perform.

Not anything like "yeah I just made 20m bucks! Time to take the foot off the gas!"

No. I thinknits just a simple trying to live up to expectations

I'd also wager like MOST players in their first big contract that the 2nd season (next year for mangiapane) will be a much better performance.

Yep, and he’s struggling to gel with Kadri as his centre. Ruzicka finding some success should give us the ability to do this:

Huberdeau - Kadri - Dube
Ruzicka - Lindholm - Toffoli
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman

Getting back to 88-11-20 would be a good start. That was a great 2nd line.

I'm a bit concerned about Ruzicka's last two games.

He wasn't going to stay on the heater, but he was back to that invisible guy that we've seen after a few good games.

Hoping he jumps back into it today.

Don't need him to be a top line winger, but a top nine winger level solves a lot of current problems.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Huberdeau and Ruzicka swapped soon.

Penguins had the majority of high danger chances, Flames backup stole the point

Best game of the season for a Flames goalie in my view

Agreed. I thought he slipped back into that tentative, passive game that we were seeing earlier. He needs to continue playing on his toes and pushing the play.

And with Lindholm playing better, I would like to see Huberdeau back with him:

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Toffoli
Mang/Ruzicka - Kadri - Dube
Ruzicka/Mang - Backlund - Coleman

Could also move Dube to Backlund's line and put Ruzicka with Mang-Kadri
