Four years would be absurd for him. Interesting stuff.

To me the most logical reason why this was reported and then retracted is that there must be a deal in place, ready to sign, contingent on a trade being made.
The deal being leaked, took away some Jays leverage for a possible trade so they had a team rep make a statement saying there is no official deal.
We will see but that’s my guess.

Hopefully today we see:
- An outgoing package including an outfielder for a quality starting pitcher
- Brantley signing made official
- A Brad Hand signing
Then the only real question mark will be whether they try to roll with Vlad at 3B or not, unless of course they include that little fix by acquiring a 3B along with the starting pitcher in the 1st step.

I think the coaching staff would have to be really surprised to see Vladdy show the team he can handle third. First base, rotating DH seems to be his destiny at the moment.

Totally. I don’t think there that much a gap between a major league bad third baseman and an average one, but he still doesn’t have the agility and build for a classic third baseman. He really is destined to play first. And I’m fine with that. While it’s not a big deal if he plays third in the regular season, in the playoffs that defence becomes much more critical. I choose another guy instead. This really could be special if Atkins and crew are able to potentially address every deficiency on the team in one offseason.

If you sign Brantley, then you either trade Tellez, or you move Guerrero back to 3rd.
Hernandez and Brantley would rotate RF/DH so you can't also rotate Tellez and Guerrero on DH.
You need to make choices.
And if you can have a lineup that includes Hernandez, Brantley, Guerrero AND Tellez all playing at the same time, along with Bichette, Biggio, Springer and Gurriel, you do it. That might be the strongest batting lineup in baseball.
3rd isn't the most important defensive position. Guerrero playing 3rd is a small price to pay for that lineup.

Wow.
Brantley back to the Astros apparently.
I can't believe that happened today. Kind of takes the steam out everything when we should be super excited right now.
Dammit.

Faaaaaack. That hurts bad. 2 years / $32 MM. Well worth the money but what was the Jays offer for three years? Was it the same thing that the astros beat out in 2 years? It hurts.

Im not sure you realize how historically bad the Jays were at D last season
They were -39 Runs saved above average. In a 60 game season!! That's over half a run we give away a game - With Vladdy at 1st ( Mind you he was worth -4 runs over 34 games, or 16 runs over 1,200 innings (approx a season) so maybe it doesnt matter as he's horrendous at both
Now the Jays got rid of some brutal D players, so maybe we naturally get better and can have terrible Vlad playing D.
Mind blowing bad D last season: (Season) (1200 Inning on pace)
Drury (-6) (-58)
Fisher (-6) (-80)
Grichuk (-8) (-24) replaced with Springer
Panik (-5) (-18)

Interesting. wonder what happened. Feels like too many people ran with this to just be a bad source.
Would have been awesome to think of the potential but I'm still really excited about the Jays lineup.

Yeah that blows big time.
They really could have used that left handed bat and just his pure hitting prowess and ability to get on base. Plus the fact that it gave the Jays the ability to trade from a perceived area of strength to shore up potential weaknesses.

Sounds to me like Houston came in with a last minute offer where Michael preferred going back. Pro agents can be scummy. Most of the time when it gets out that it was done, it’s more or less a formality. In this case that formality wasn’t on paper so Houston looks like they came in and beat it somehow. More reason to hate Houston.

Houston probably came back with a big last minute offer to keep him.
If you're Brantley probably easier to stay where you are than to have to worry about moving in a pandemic.
I'm actually not too fussed about them not getting Brantley. He's 34 by the start of the season, which just happens to often be the age when the age curve really starts to decline for MLBers.

None of that has anything to do with Guerrero.
The relevant issues are: how does Guerrero compare to Drury (or whatever other options we have at 3rd)? And how does Tellez compare to Guerrero at first?
From there, you determine the impact of his being at 1st or 3rd, and then decide whether the increased offense is worth it.
However, no Brantley now anyway, so it's all moo.
