This is starting to sound a bit like EVE Online.
LTI would be good for that ship that was worth $11,000 real dollars that got destroyed recently in EVE Online.

That Corvette will be very cool until the day when your sitting on your bridge and watch in horror as one of your drunk guild mates blows landing his fighter and completely guts the ship.

If this game is EVE without the ######ed learning curve and proper space combat, I'd be very happy.

I'm super excited about the FPS portion.
You and your friends flying down on a carrier and knocking out its shields and thrusters, docking to it, then fighting for control of the ship is pretty awesome.

I'm betting there are going to be quite a few Tiger's Claws out there as well as Iceman's, Maniac's, Angel's, Spirit's, Bossman's, Maverick's, etc.

Buying ships with real money is something they're only doing for the initial fundraising, that option will disappear when the game goes live and you'll only be able to buy ships with in-game credits. There will be an option to buy in-game credits with cash, but you'll only be allowed to buy so many within a certain time period
Star Citizen will be way less hardcore than Eve, Chris Roberts has said as much. It's way more focused on ship combat and there won't be any RPG elements involved (your character is basically just an avatar, any upgrades or "leveling up" will be for your ship only)

So if you're flying a single-manned craft without insurance and it gets destroyed is it going to be easy to get a new one? How grindy is this game going to be?

Doomsday and Jazz (that filthy traitor)
I'm still amazed at how much the Wing Commander franchise resonated with me.
I'm betting there will be some cool easter eggs in the game.

Well first thing, insurance isn't going to break your bank. It will be a small regular expense the same as hangar fees, fuel, etc. But if you do lose your ship, no insurance, and no cash to buy a new one, then you basically become a freelancer and take any jobs available (work for the local police, escort freighters, etc) and either fly a loaner ship or become a crew member on a bigger ship until you earn enough money to buy your own ship again (the starter ship is not going to be very expensive)
Chris Roberts has explicitly said that there will be no "grind" like there is in Eve or other MMO's

Everything about this sentence gives me a big space-boner.

Yes, getting very excited. I bought the Freelancer, but I'm thinking of looking at the Constellation.

I have to decide when I am going to buy a new computer to play this thing on. I am waiting until reviews come out on what you need to run the space combat models with tons of ships at max detail.
I remember Wing Commander II led me to double my ram, and Wing Commander III I had to updrade and buy a CD drive.

I actually think it would be a great idea if you had to join a crew first and earn your way to a ship. It would certainly make people more comfortable with the idea of multiplayer, plus you would get to know the ships better.
How cool would it be to start as an engineer and build that skill up so that when you get your own ship you can fix your ship faster and cheaper.
Or be a gunner and get skill points on your accuracy.
Or be part of a boarding party and get a multiplier on earning money.
It would be a great way to start the game and get comfortable in that world.
Plus if a member of the "Crew" wrongs you, you might run into that ship and crew later and take a little joy in the kill.

Yes, I was planning on starting a CP fleet when we got closer to the release.
How many ships do we own so far?

Ugh now you guys are tearing me apart. Might have to buy a second account for the CP fleet.
(GoonFleet owns my soul).

I haven't bought in yet. But I would be willing to jump in if I'm still alive in a couple of years.

There will be a lot of optimization in the next 24-months, plus the usual fast pace of technology, so it is hard to say absolutely. As of October 15th, 2012, the current internal alpha build requirements are 4GB dual core PC with a GTX 460 or greater, with recommended i7 2500, 2600, 2700 and GTX 670 or greater. Since the game is built on CryEngine, their system requirements will stay roughly the same as ours.
On reddit in the "Ask Chris Anything!" session on February 22nd, 2012 Chris wrote the following information:
It's a major focus for me (to optimize SC for multicore and SLI) as I develop on Intel 3960x hexacore OC with GTX680SLI. This is not the requirement for the final game, but shows the kind of machine you want to have for the game
Personally I'm waiting until the GeForce 800 series comes out next year. It'll have over twice the performance that the 700 series does, with less power consumption and less heat generation

Well in the single player campaign you're part of Squadron 42 (elite unit, think Rogue Squadron from Star Wars). And since the campaign will come out before the persistent universe (part of the alpha release), it will give everyone a chance to get familiar with different types of ships and how combat works. Completing the campaign will also give your character Citizenship, which gives you higher status than a normal civilian and opens up more career options (you don't need to complete the campaign or join the military to become a citizen, but it seems to be the quickest way right now)
As for your second point, there is no skills that your character "levels up", Chris Roberts has made it very clear that this isn't an RPG and doesn't want to put any mechanics in that would require grinding. Almost everything in the game will be skill based, and they've talked about you needing to perform repairs mid-flight and being able to don an envirosuit to do a space walk on your ship. So you'll likely need to read about your ship and learn how to do these repairs, then go and actually do it, instead of just hitting a "Repair" button that's dependent on how high your engineering or whatever skill would be. There's also talk about purchasing advanced ship AI that could do these repairs for you, an option for the rich and lazy

At this point, I own one ship, and would jump on board with a CP Fleet. I haven't committed anywhere else (or even thought about for that matter).
Too bad we didn't think of this sooner. Might have been able to "group-buy" a carrier for ourselves.
