It’s the latest sign of how much Canada’s oil and gas sector is struggling.

On Monday, eight Canadian oil companies based in Calgary were delisted from the S&P/TSX Composite Index because their market capitalization had dropped below minimum requirements.

"This is almost an inevitable outcome," said Jeremy McCrae, energy analyst with Raymond James. "For the most part, a lot of institutional investors have seen non-stop regulation hurdles that have faced the energy sector and, as a result, a lot of them have left the space and this is almost an outcome that a lot of us expected to come."

The companies delisted from the S&P/TSX composite index include:

Birchcliff Energy Ltd.
Development Corp.
Ensign Energy Services Inc.
Kelt Exploration Ltd.
NuVista Energy Ltd.
NexGen Energy Ltd.
Precision Drilling Corp.
Peyto Exploration
TORC Oil & Gas Ltd.
All eight companies operate in the field of oil and gas or drilling. Their exclusion means they will miss out on investment from index-tracking passive funds.

Aren't we almost maxed at rail capacity though? Maybe trans-mountain expansions of rail lines will be easier to approve than pipelines...

I'm unsure how much room is available on the trains, but you can truck shipping containers too. not sure if thats economical though. But you do see containers stacked on the rail cars, so you'd be able to transport more product in containers than you could in the standard oil rail cars.

I'm doubtful of how this can scale, and if the economics are even good enough for companies to want to use this. Listening to the chairman of this company on BNN last november he said that they need a massive capital influx of something like 60 million dollars to get to the equivalent of 10,000 bpd. He was also very coy when asked on the economics, he said once these pellets get to the water the economics are the same as dilbit but there's no way that manufacturing these pellets and shipping them by rail, or god forbid a truck, can match economics of pipeline. So this really looks like something that's not as efficient and can't scale large enough to make a dent in the gap between production and egress capacity. I was excited when I read this article until I saw the amount shipped, 130 barrels, total. That's what one of my middle tier heavy oil wells does in a day.

It's exciting that people are trying new things but frustrating that this is even an issue. This whole process is only necessary because a large portion of our idiot country has been brainwashed into believing that there's some kind of imperative safety risk of pipelines and tankers when there's not. And our malevolent Federal Government has passed a blockade bill on our northern coast when there's no coherent reason to do so. It's ####ing whack.

There is plenty of rail capacity to Prince George and Van term. You would likely be using a 53' high cube (53' x 8'6" x 9'6") and stacked 2 high on a single chassis. You can't stack tankers on rail so you are doubling your rail capacity right there.

I wonder if you could ship these pellets through a pipeline then using compressed air? We need some really bizarre solutions to this problem, and it's encouraging to see someone trying.

Not really oil, but gas for sure...

I remember friends promoting Bellatrix at $8 a share, down from mid $50's thinking it was a bargain. At any rate that seems like a big company to take such a dive.

This could go in any of the political threads as well. I searched, saw lots of Vivian Krause information, but didn't see this link anywhere. Even if it is, it's worth another posting as I'm sure there are others, like I, who may have missed it.

Edit....The purpose of the link is for the documentary embedded in the article.

Wow. They got us hook, line and sinker.

Got us to completely landlock our most valuable resource so they can rape and pillage us for it while making a killing on their own resources.

surprised that this has not already been noted, but there are apparently layoffs at husky this morning.

husky not saying how many, but suggestions that the number is in the 100's

EDIT - this is a bit of a never mind as it seems to be noted in the other thread about layoffs in the oilpatch

When a 135 year old company bails on this country there's probably more to the story than Albertans are whiners.
