Default My PS3 suddenly stopped playing games

It was working fine yesterday, turned off the game, tried it a few hours later and now it will not play any games or even any discs.

Are there any simple fixes?

Not sure about simple fixes, but if there's no immediate answer it may be time to make an appointment with Dan.

Does it only refuse to play disc games? Can you play PSN games from the harddrive? Need to determine if this is a dead blu-ray laser or a bigger issue.

I'd say laser or fuse probably blew or disc sensor problem. What version of the PS3 are you using? If you have a disc inserted and the blue light is on on the station but no game is showing up, you have a bad or extremely dirty laser. If you have a disc inserted and the blue light is not on and you can't see the game disc it's probably a bad disc sensor.

Either is probably hardware and can be fixed. You'll need replacement parts though more than likely.

I don't have any games on the hard drive. So far I've tried games on discs and a blue ray movie and nothing works.

Netflix and all that other stuff is still working.

It's also making a weird loading noise when I insert a game if that helps.

Your blu-ray laser is toast.

I'd say it's broken. You shouldn't eat it StrykerSteve.

Also, don't jam the laser with raspberry.

I had the exact same issue with my first gen 60 gb ps3... I could play downloaded PSN games, but couldnt load up discs. from the research I did, it sounded like the laser was pooched. It can be fixed, but I opted to buy a new system... I kept my 1st gen system and will likely get it repaired once I get a hankerin' to play my ps1 and ps2 games again.

I dont think theres an easy fix. Youll likely have to give it to the local dude that repairs these systems (as posted by others).

I also had this happen on my original ps3. Had to contact Sony, who sent me a box to courier (at there expense) my PS3 to them. Took about two weeks and they sent it back.

No easy fix in this case, and if you are out of warranty you might be hooped.

So I took it apart, realized I was way in over my head and put it back together without doing anything.

Decided I'd finish off breaking bad and then realized it now is reading games again....figure that one out?

If it's a laser problem or laser spindle problem which it sounds like, these aren't too hard to fix. Parts are relatively cheap online.

When my PS3 fried I went to that Killasoft guy and he fixed it pretty quickly and it has been working fine since. I had the YLOD though and that doesn't look to be your problem. If it persists I would contact that due though he knows his stuff.

We had this happen and continued to read blu ray discs from turning the machine straight up until a movie or game started and then setting the machine down.

It still reads CDs and DVDs I'm assuming?
