If you do decide to drive, park down the hill at Riley Park and walk up, though it requires some level of physical fitness. $3 a day, though you've got to get there around 7:30-7:35 to get a spot. Certainly cheaper than the ridiculous lots that are $26/day or the parkade at $17/day. Parkade is free if you leave after 11 though, so during midterm season we just camp in there all day then study, hit the gym, whatever.

If you plan on driving in, you can also get monthly parking at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association. I forget what they charge, but same deal as parking by Riley Park - have to climb the hill up to SAIT.

By the time you drive and find a parking spot and walk to the c-train, you might as well take the bus from your house to the train station.

Yeah back in 02-03 when I lived in McKenzie Lake, I'd take the rush hour express bus, the 103 I think, at 7:02 am. Take that downtown and then hop on the C-Train for the rest of the jaunt. It took less than an hour usually and if I got on at one of the earlier stops, I could grab a seat and sleep the 35-40 minutes to downtown. Coming home is a bit trickier since you'll have to be downtown at specific times to catch it and you likely won't get a seat.

Anyway, that was 15 years ago so maybe you'll have to research some variation of this strategy.

I spent over $1100 for 8 months on parking at SAIT this year. Finally decided to take the train as is wasn't worth it. I use a wheelchair so at the time, paying for parking seemed like a good idea. My commute is about ½ hour longer. Worth it.

When I was doing my masters, it was the opposite. I was recovering from back surgery for the second half of it, and to get from the LRT station at the U of C to, well, anywhere on campus felt like a 200 km trek. Finally started paying for parking, and I even obtained a disabled parking pass. The ~$600 or whatever it was to park hurt, but I probably would have dropped out or deferred had I kept having to hoof it.

I just drove to the area about 5-6 blocks north of SAIT, free residential parking all day, e'ery day. If you can't walk 5-6 blocks... don't take this option.

Where is the free parking there? That's residential parking; you need a residential parking permit to park.

My inlaws live on 21st ave and its free parking. No permit required.

Must be a narrow segment that has the residential parking. We used to do some Brickz4Kids classes directly north of SAIT and it was all residential permits required or 2 hour only parking.

There's a school north on 10th street on the east side of 10th, lots of free parking all around it, no restrictions.

Yeah, I had just assumed you meant the region north that was bounded by 10th and 14th.

Having just spent two years at SAIT, here's my advice.

1. If you have the money, park at the Shopping Mall ($8/day) and walk the one block to campus. It is the cheapest "No fail" drive/park option. Other options (parking in nearby communities as an example) are great, but there will be days where there is NO parking available.

2. Take the train. It's not perfect but this is the best option overall. Yes the train is packed early AM, but you need to just embrace the suck. Pick the station that has the most parking and be there by 715am.

Try these options for a week each and see what you think.

This thread makes me wonder....I know a lot of young familes that have moved to the deep south to for the lake communities and all they have to offer for that phase of life.

But in 10 or so years, when the kids are approaching post secondary - do they all move for better proximity to the north or west side and it's post secondary options?
