Conroy's been in the league. Heck, he WAS that guy who performed totally differently in a different role (St. Louis #3C vs Calgary #1C). He's a few months removed from TRADING a guy away who performed totally differently in a different role (after coach after coach - including Sutter's brief stint - refused to try it). He's obviously aware of successful organizations who do things the way he described, as someone whose job it is to watch virtually every game everywhere.
Honestly, the fact that there is (yet again) a disconnect on player evaluation between management and coaching philosophies is baffling.

Meh, I’m just not impressed by Conroy. What’s he done in the front office? And he seems to undermine not only Sutter, but Treliving, in his public comments. I suspect Conroy has hit his post playing career ceiling.
As for carte blanche - that’s what a coach, especially one just hired, gets as far as the on lineup goes.

Yeah that's tough. If so I'd expect buffalo to give us jokiharju or at least Hagg or Butcher. Maybe 2 of the 3, 50% retained. Something lol

Man, without Andersson, Monahan, Dube and (for most of the year) Eichel, that 2022 1st is gonna be a high lottery pick.

What’s concerning is when coaches get their way completely on the matter. I wasn’t especially pleased with the Sutter hire, and this just validates my concern that giving a coach who has such a short-term perspective the decisive voice in roster decisions is going to be bad for this franchise.

Without debating "Sutter good/bad" point, I think, given ownership and behind the scenes dynamic, we are in an NFLstyle set-up now, where the coach runs the show, and the GM just fetches stuff that the coach wants. Whether that is for good or ill is a separate debate...

I feel like the only way we deal Hanifin in a trade for Eichel is if a d-man or developed prospect is coming back with him. That or a side deal is lined up to bring in a solid D from elsewhere.

Darryl says hi from Chicago.
There is no disconnect. He was asked about disappointments and said - like any Asst GM would - it would have been nice to see more of the kids. He then went on to explain exactly why Sutter did what he did.

I mean, you have the coach who's job is to have the team ready for the start of the regular season.
And you have the chatty kathy assistant GM who is in charge of the player development pipeline.
Not much else to see here. I guess we could start a controversy if we wanted to though.

Way too much. More like:
Flames' Counter: Monahan, Valimaki, 1st
Meet at: Monahan, Valimaki, 1st, 2nd
or (at most) Monahan, Valimaki, 1st, Pelletier

Isn't this talk about Sutter not giving young players a chance the reason why he said last week that some fans/media were "full of ####"?
Gawdin and Kylington made the opening day roster. Duehr stayed until the final cuts even though he had next to no pro experience. Sutter said the last 30 players in training camp would be needed at different points this season.
It's not like any of the other prospects made the case that they should be getting looks with NHL players. Ruzicka, Phillips, Pelletier, Petterson... none of them knocked the door down.
As for the rumour about the Sabres wanting Hanifin and Monahan... I doubt it. One of them would be needed as a cap dump, but if Friedman said the Sabres weren't wiling to take package like Gadureau and Tkachuk in a deal, why would Buffalo want Hanifin and Monahan?
Our D needs Hanifin anyways. And if Eichel does come here, having his friend in Hanifin around to help him to adjust to Calgary would be nice.

Man if those comments which couldn't easily been intended in a way that is not meant to throw shade at Sutter sours you on Conroy then wow, I really don't know what to say.
Except that you're probably reaching.

I doubt it.
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk alone is good enough to keep them afloat.
The goaltending will be solid.
The defense is going to be physical if nothing else.
Say what you will about the Calgary Flames, they know how to finish top-25.

BurningLeafPodcast had a mock proposal from a Flames perspective
2022 1st
2023 2nd (conditional)
Monahan
Dube
Valimaki
Coronato
God damn that is pricey... but I'd bite the bullet and do it.

I’d sure rather do Monahan, Coronato, Valimaki and Dube than have to include Hanifin or Andersson.

That is a lot...
If I give up that many pieces I want conditions on that first contingent on Eichels health and/or performance.
And I'd prefer they swap Coronato with Zary or Pelletier.

that's a lot to give up in a trade... add in the fact that Eichel hasn't had surgery yet, so no one really knows whether he's going to come back at 100%.
if Eichel was never injured, sure, I can see that trade, but for me at least, the unknowns with his surgery should be accounted for in the assets given up.
