My go-to places are:
Kinjo (multiple locations - just binge out at the floating bar
Aji (NE on 32nd) - Just a nice family-run place
Shibuya (16th) - I'm moreso there for the cheap oysters Mon-Thurs and their beef tataki, but their sushi is actually super solid.
Yamato (across from Churchill) - MASSIVE chunks of salmon sashimi. They also serve lobster sushi there, which I haven't seen anywhere else.

Used to go to Sushi Hanami long time ago when I worked in that area, it was good and the rolls were HUGE, could hardly fit one piece in your mouth. Very cost effective.

No idea if it's still good.

Some people get turned off by it being more traditional sushi, but this fusion stuff to me is out of control.
Zipang is all about quality. The pieces are reasonable/fair sized, but the quality is outstanding for Calgary. Plus they are kid friendly too.
I like Shikiji, I get their bento for take out lunch now and again. I don't find the quality anywhere near Zipang level but it is a solid lunch.
I hate Kinjo. Gross.
Wa's (W6!) was probably the best place until it closed. So sad.
I might try Red Ember since it is nearby and has flown under the radar for me. I keep going back to Zipang though, they never let me down.
A bit of derail, but I find Vancouver Sushi to be the most over hyped sushi on the planet. I was there in August and every highly rated place we went to was mediocre. San Fran/Honolulu, now those are Sushi towns.

Big Catch Sushi at the Market on Macleod (former Kingsland Farmer's Market) is my go to. Limited to being open when the market is (a bit later on Fri/Sat night) but worth making the effort when they are open. Just a take out counter, but the fish is super fresh and they have some interesting rolls. The guys who work there are very friendly too. Cost is comparable to Kinjo nearby, but the quality is much better.

Li-Ao is great if you're looking for economical choices if you want sushi
but they are the furthest from being great sushi
For a small outlet like Big Catch, it's amazing that they have a dedicated cook who works on sculpting garnishes and wasabi on the dishes

Is this the case now? I know during their groupon fiasco, their sushi and sashimi sizes were puny. Sashimi maybe 1/4 to 1/3 the size of Kinjo. I haven't been back since.

This used to be my go to, but it changed a year or so ago and has a new name (can't remember the new one). I went once and it was not great. We ordered a yam roll and the yam was like biting into a tree branch, it hadn't been fried near long enough. They did up another one that was ok but the rest of the meal was average or below average. Haven't been back since, we now go to Kinjo. It kind of sucks because we had gone for so long we kind of knew the chefs, but they had all been replaced by the new owners anyway.

That sucks. I haven't been there in a while because it's out of the way. So you guys may be right.

Misato, Momoyama, Zipang, Red Ember, and Li-Ao are all good, and all in different ways.

Sigh. The two best quality sushi places closed recently: SUSHI CLUB in Kensington and WA's on Centre.
Best sushi AND best value is now Big Catch at Market at Macleod.

Absolutely. This ridiculous "Jarome Iginla Roll" B.S. has to stop. It's all silly rolls and mayonnaise on everything.
Kinjo is great for family/fun dining but it's not "good sushi" even though it's "good food".
I was very sad to see that WA's closed. Anybody know why?

From what I heard, it was something health related with the owner.

Bumping this.
I live downtown, near a many a sushi place.
But none, stand out like Els in Maria Loop. Not your earls’esque interior decor, akin to the Globefish across the street. Instead a small quaint lil cafe, with the best family run service around. Very large serving sizes, (Toro!), great value, and this delicious tempura fried, Popcorn Shrimp roll.
