Pretty smart path to take for a player. From an educational and business side (UFA).

Isn't that already happening?

The way the CBA works also benefits teams taking these players, though... e.g., Gaudreau wasn't eligible for an offer sheet, for example, because of his path to the league, and despite a brief holdout, the Flames ended up getting him on a bargain contract because he had no other alternative. Now Boeser and McAvoy are in that spot (not sure if there are others).

I thought Fox was overrated by Flames fans when he was Flames property. I continue to think he’s overrated, my opinion on that didn’t change one bit after he was traded.

In reality Valimaki is a substantially better prospect. I also think this list is garbagio

Agree 100%.

When Fox was a Flame prospect, I had him 4th behind Valimaki, Andersson and Kylington. Always thought he was over-rated.

No way in hell would I trade Valimaki for Fox (straight up as players, even assuming no signing issues)

To be fair I wasn't a fan of Fox before we traded him.

Interested in who the oilers have on this list and their rankings. The flames often get criticized by their media on trading picks away yet the Oilers for the most part keep their picks yet have a terrible prospect pool

Bouchard (5th) is the only Oiler on the list.

They were all better prospects than Fox at some point. As evidenced by their draft position.

Fox has really elevated his standing though among people who have no dog in the fight. So while as Flames fans it’s quite possible we wouldn’t have rated him quite so highly vis a vis other D prospects at the time he was traded, his stock has risen and he has shown improvement. Flames fans’ objectivity in evaluating this naturally disappeared the day he was traded.

When evaluating prospects, I think it’s valuable to ask the question, “what if he was my team’s prospect?” For example, Evan Bouchard has 87 points in 67 games in his draft year in the OHL as a defenceman. Many first round forwards don’t accomplish that. I personally feel fine with Bouchard being 5th.

It is worth noting that the author explicitly identified Kylington as not meeting the criteria as he was too old, implying that he would have made the list from a pure talent analysis.

Will we have anyone next year after Valimaki and Dube graduate?? Petterson? Pelletier?

I wasn't high in him before he was traded. Now, that may be because I have a bias against undersized D from one of the lesser colleges, but it wasn't because whose system he was in.

Yes, but they had him rated highly before the trade. I did not. He is not very big, and not very fast.

But for those that do like him, I can see him being ranked higher than Kylington now, sure. But Andersson, no. And Valimaki? Laughable.

It's okay that some people weren't very high on him - that doesn't mean they're necessarily biased. Just different opinions.

Not sure how its laughable, his college numbers alone are above elite level and the only reason he isnt ranked higher is because of his size.

Isn’t it a given that a team’s fans would not be objective in comparing their prospects to those of others teams? Using a term like laughable almost confirms that point.

Maybe you didn’t get my drift. It doesn’t matter what people thought of him when he was a Flame, this is a current assessment as of today. Flame fans may not be giving him much credit for his progression since he left the team. That is all.

Reading the opening paragraph leads me to believe he would have had Kylington on this Top 50 list as well if he had played a handful less NHL games last season. Could (should?) have had 3.

I don't know why so many fans are hung up on Fox. Yes the Flames drafted him but he was never going to play here and who cares if some guy thinks he's a top 15 NHL prospect? Until he actually does anything noteworthy in the NHL I fail to see how he's any different than other past prospects that strong-armed their way into that market only to bust or become just an average NHL player.

Fox is a one-dimensional player with below average skating who is putting up numbers in college. Being small AND slow is a recipe for disaster for an NHL defenseman - other teams will expose him. His ceiling, IMO, is a #4 D, PP specialist. His floor is never make it as an NHL regular.

Valimaki has everything you want in a defenseman. He has a cannon, pretty elite skating, size, strength, he hits, he's smart and can play in his own zone. His upside is a legit #1, and considering that he showed at 20 that he can take a regular shift in the NHL, his floor is an NHL defenseman.

It's laughable, IMO.

Fox has only not been Flame property for a year now. His current assessment is similar to what it was a year after after his second season. If someone says they rated him behind Valimaki a year ago and rates him the same now, that argument is valid.

If Fox's value had skyrocketed in the last year I'd agree with you, but it hasn't.
