There was talk last week of remaking The Princess Bride. It was shot down by the production company but of course there was outrage.
I thought it’d be fun to hear what others thought were “perfect” movies. This is going to be super subjective so try not to just pick your favourite movie. Pick movies that you would not change one thing about. Movies that couldn’t be improved, even with modern special effects.
For me I think Princess Bride is one. Shaun of the Dead. Flight Club. Back to the Future.

I would argue that Star Wars, ET and Ghostbusters could be improved a bit with better special effects. Nothing that changed the story but things that were obviously green screened or mediocre claymation. The Terror Dogs in Ghostbusters look terrible.
I guess even with my own criteria Princess Bride isn’t perfect. The rat creature is brutal and would be improved by modern effects.

To me that’s what makes them perfect. They are amazing despite their limited budget, sometimes because of it. We all saw what George did to Star Wars with a big budget.
Many of the movies listed in this thread are just a random assortment of people’s favourite movies.
To me the criteria you laid out mean that even with updated special effects, the movie couldn’t have been better. Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Planet of the Apes and Princess Bride all meet this perfectly.
Another good one is Ferris Buller’s Day Off. Not special effects related but I think it’d be difficult, impossible even, to recapture the spirit, chemistry between actors, pitch perfect performances, capturing the cultural zeitgeist the way it did.
I guess I interpreted it more along the lines of “movies too good to be remade”.

Big trouble in little China I have probably seen this movie at least a hundred times and still if I see it on tv I will sit down and watch it, and still feels fresh.
