Default Panic in San Jose...GM Scrambles

We were supposed to be good. We are not.

Never one to be overly patient, after 7 games into the young season GM MJK is moving and shaking tying to get the San Jose Sharks going. History shows he is willing to do anything to win games.

There will be no rebuild here, but there will be a re-tooling as long as necessary to try and get going. This week saw a number of trades go down, the most recent with the Nashville Predators:

To San Jose:
Chris Kreider
PK Subban

To Nashville:
Drew Doughty
Ilya Kovalchuk

Earlier in the week saw some poor performers hit the road like Jack MF Johnson (-9) and Tyler Myers (-5). Those deals shake down as follows:

In:
Marcus Foligno
Mike Matheson
2021 2nd (buf)

Out:
Tyler Myers
Jack MF Johnson
Nick Foligno

Rumor has it that MJK is completely fed up with Jakub Voracek who has been completely useless playing up and down the lineup and even Robin Lehner is on a very short leash after starting the year with horrible stats.

Something has to give...what will it mean? Trades.

7 Day Summary

In:
Tomas Hertl
Jonathan Marchessault
Chris Kreider
PK Subban
Marcus Foligno
Mike Matheson
2021 2nd (buf)

Out:
Sam Reinhart
Drew Doughty
Ilya Kovalchuk
Jacok Voracek
Tyler Myers
Jack MF Johnson
Nick Foligno

As the owner of the SJ Sharks 1st round pick. I am enjoying this.

Many offers and some good trade discussions but ultimately decided to keep things simple and trade Voracek in a lateral 1 for 1 swap. trade details to follow...

Some interesting names were tossed around on Tuesday when Jakub Voracek was thrown under the bus by his GM. At least half a dozen GM's showed serious interest in obtaining the bum and I was only too happy to send him packing.

Most deals would have resulted in lateral swaps while one was trending toward a bigger trade before late night talks broke off. At the end, he was traded to Tampa Bay for Jonathan Marchessault...two very similar players accross the board, let's compare:

Tale of the Tape

Jacob Voracek
LW/RW
30 years old
$6.5Mill X 2
72OV
6GP 0G-2A-2P -3

Jonathan Marchessault
LW/C/RW
29 years old
$6.5Mill X 3
71OV
7GP 1G-0A-1P -1

Obviously the key here was picking up a player who is trending to double Voracek's output...we expect him to be given an opportunity to play on the top line with Daddy Mac and Strome to see if they can get going.

The trades and roster adjustments continue on Wednesday as Sam Reinhart was just traded to the Wild...

To San Jose:
Tomas Hertl

To Minny:
Sam Reinhart
250K

Sam has been with us for awhile and we acquired him before he started to pick it up in the NHL. We have always liked him and he did well with the Sharks last season but has struggled so far this year which is why a change was made.

Another example of two GM's making a lateral deal to try and get things going.

Rumor has it that Hertl was in trade talks with the Wild last night in a Voracek deal but they fell apart late.

Happy to bring in a guy we've never had to see how it works out.

I remember thinking Jiri overpaid for Hertl earlier this year. That might have been sour grapes though since I lost out on him ha ha.
Is Reinhart better than Hertl? I don't think so but as a move to change team chemistry? Maybe it works for both teams.

I don't know that i overpaid for him. He's a RFA aged high producing player - but I've been puzzled by the values being given and the variability of those this entire year.
But yeah this deal is primarily about just changing up the chemistry. Hertl has a slightly higher rating but Reinhart is younger.
