Default Ongoing Sci-Fi, Comic Book Movie Thread

There are a lot of threads on this subject.

On my recent THOR movie thread GreenLantern mentioned that he was going to start a comic book thread before he saw mine.

I thought that was an awesome idea.

I also liked THOR's Ongoing Science Thread where things are updated as they occur.

So, I'll start by re-posting GreenLantern's link to the upcoming third Batman movie.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog has confirmed that Christopher Nolan’s next and final Batman film will open July 20, 2012. Presently in postproduction on “Inception,” Nolan is working on the story for the as-yet-untitled Batman film with writer David Goyer.
Also slated for release in the summer of 2012 are Marvel’s “The Avengers” (May 4), Paramount’s sequel to the rebooted “Star Trek” (June 29) and the first of Sony’s new series of Spider-Man films (July 3).

I'm a Joss Whedon fan. Not like super fan, but a fan none the less. That being said if I read 'The Astonishing Xmen' by Whedon, would I be totally lost?

Umm, if you just started picking it up monthly? Yeah. I'd grab some TPBs first.

No, no, no. I should elaborate. I meant if I just picked up the trades. Are they pretty self contained? How referent are they on previous canon?

Writers tend to ret-con things they don't like so it helps. Obviously knowing back story is good, but very rarely will something happen that is completely dependent on reading a previous writer's work and if it does just wiki it/ask around.

You should be fine.

You should be ok with Astonishing. It's the only X-Men title I read and I have no idea what's going on in the other books.

Yeah, I know Joss didn't touch the Civil War because he isn't a fan of mega cross overs.

That and the only good part about Civil War was the fact Deadpool shot Hercules in the face like 15 times with sleeping darts.

That cross-over almost made me stop reading Cable/Deadpool, since Cable was essentially the most powerful player in the Marvel universe still at that point and he picked a side and then did... nothing... wait what?

That had always been Cable's problem in recent years, up until the X-Messiah arcs. He was the most powerful mutant alive with access to future knowledge and had his own country and yet... did nothing with it? He could smite every villain in the marvel-universe with a thought and yet he did... nothing?

BAH!

Oh great, Megatron is the Red Skull. If wonder if the Australian can do a good German accent.

I know studios like to go with big names but I'd really like for Hollywood to start going for more unknown and new actors.

Hugo never should have done the Matrix. What was the last movie he did where he didn't play an arch-nemesis or super-villain other than LotR?

Of a film in general? Or of the source material? Or both?

Of the source material. If I wasn't familiar with it I might not have minded it but it completely ruined the film for me.
