So is there any retailers I can earn points without spending a lot of money to buy something useful in order to keep our Aeroplan points alive? Obviously we are not going to book flights for the foreseeable future.
Suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks
P.S. And we don't have any Aeroplan credit cards and not planning to sign up for one. Too many cards already...

Do you have a regular amex? Could transfer some points.
Or if you have any hotel points (eg Marriott, Hilton, etc) you could transfer those to aeroplan.

Home Hardware is what I do to keep my points active.
Garbage bags, light bulbs, batteries, grab a flyer and find something you need or a consumable on sale.
Scan your card and voila your points are safe for another year.
There's one around the corner from where I work and another 5 minutes from where I live so it's not hard to keep my points active that way.
Its by far the easiest for me.

I just found out that there are total of ZERO Home Hardware stores in Calgary. They only have stores in surrounding suburbs like Airdrie - but I guess that is sort of close, only 10 minutes from downtown Calgary

Oh wow. Maybe you should move here. They're everywhere: Sydney, Sydney River, North Sydney, New Waterford, Glace Bay, Baddeck, Indonesia, St. Peter's, Whycocomagh, Cheticamp, Louisdale, and Port Hood.
Plus we have the ocean.
And if you build your house out here, think of all those sweet sweet aeroplan points!

Sign up for Asking Canadians surveys. They reward you with Aeroplan points if you complete the surveys honestly and fit the demographic they are looking for. If for some reason you get turned down in the survey, you still get 5 points for trying.

Usually they send out an email saying the points are expiring. It’s based on inactivity of a year. I thought they were planning to move away from that though

Does this count for keeping the account active?
I wasn't sure. I feel like they didn't count toward the Altitude Program, which caused me to doubt if they'd count to keep the points active. I mean I suppose they would, but I still did a Home Hardware stop just to be safe.

"You have 18 months before your Aeroplan points expire if there has been no activity in your account - meaning you haven’t earned, redeemed, donated, transferred or converted any points. But so long as you stay active, your points won’t expire at all."
From the Aeroplan website.
As long as you earn or spend a single point somewhere within 18 months, you're fine.

And, don't transfer your points unless you absolutely have to, because it will costs you a $20 service charge....We were thinking of transferring points between each other to keep the accounts active, but not wanting to pay the stupid service charges...

I find they're usually a smaller center store, where they don't have as much big box competition (or any).
@lazypucker, there's a Home Hardware not too far from me. If you're comfortable with it you can PM me your Aeroplan number and I can use that instead of mine next time I'm there.

Could you donate a buck worth of points in the aeroplan website and consider it as activity?

Don't think so...that is using points, not earning points.

This works, that's how I kept mine active. You just need activity, not earnings.
