Habs bring in Selke to compliment Art Ross

The Habs are still not happy after being dispatched in the conference finals by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

GM Goffie felt that a big key to the success of the team was having a deep centre ice position. After Niklas Backstrom was shipped out earlier in the offseason the Habs GM decided it was time to acquire a star player to fit that role.

After a back and forth of a couple weeks (mostly because I was dragging my feet) The Habs have acquired Aleksander Barkov from the Minnesota Wild for picks 3 and 30 in the upcoming draft and prospect Hendrix Lapierre.

It was a steep price to pay, however I think we now have the best 1-2 punch down the middle in McDavid and Barkov.

This move will also allow more dominoes to fall as we look to mold our team for next season.

I'd actually be curious what people thought about the deal we were discussing and if it was better. But I don't want to share it unless you are comfortable doing so.

I'm having fun stripping my team down. I won with them so now it's time to change it up. Barkov is one of my favorite players. He was the key piece in the McDavid deal. But I like the top 3 of this draft (at least 2 of the 3 players) and feel that will be a key piece going forward. Hendrix has immense potential. Those are the key pieces plus the cap savings to be more active this year in free agency.

They are pretty comparable.. comes down to preference really.

My thinking (and I told Grant this) was you could flip Larkin and come out on top in terms of assets but obviously the 3rd overall pick was the deciding factor here.

I don't think I could have flipped Larkin for 3. Not even close given his recent NHL performance.
But that offer would have caused less of an immediate hit to my team. So very different deals.

True, you may not have been able to flip him for 3, but his rating and SIM play make him valuable enough to be a comparable. That was the point I was trying to make.

Yeah I think overall value wise they are similar. One more of a hockey the other more of a futures one. Part of what I always ask myself is - how can a deal make me better now or in the future. I see the deal I made having more upside but more risk.

Grant also has much more cap space flexibility with this deal. This offseason 5-6 mill has nabbed a first round pick so there quite valuable. Larkin sucks and wouldn’t get the 3rd overall. Hopefully he has a better season to regain some of his value.
