Crowchild Trail Upgrades
Figure I'll make this thread since traffic is going to be impacted significantly for this expressway.
The city conducted a study for the Crowchild Trail corridor between 17 Ave SW to 24 Ave NW, and have developed short, medium, and long term plans.
http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation...ail-Study.aspx
Work begins now on the short term plans, and will be ongoing for the next two years. The key upgrades in this phase is added lanes on the Bow Trail bridge, added northbound lane for Crowchild between Memorial and 5 ave, and a new westbound to northbound ramp for 16 ave onto Crowchild.

I think the biggest upgrade will be that there will be 3 continuous through lanes between Bow Trail and University Drive now, instead of just 1!

Damn, I didn't know they were starting this work so soon. I saw a sign yesterday as I drove from 12th onto Crowchild indicating that construction was starting. Traffic is going to be ugly because of this.

Traffic is already ugly every day in that area. This will be short term pain, for long term gain.

Any thoughts on how bad this is going to be? Lane closures, etc?

Lane closures will be intermittent so some sections will be worse than others and parts of the project will be worse than others. Overall, this could be Glenmore/GE5 type of traffic carnage for many months.

It says on the City's website that no lanes will be closed between 5 AM and 9 PM. That should hopefully keep the traffic from being too bad.

#6 - From northbound Crowchild Trail to eastbound Memorial Drive: move the
off-ramp to the north side of eastbound Memorial Drive
|
I don't understand this...just another left side merge in onto Memorial? I guess it just extends the length of the bridge a little bit?

I would guess that closely ties to point 4. If they move the on-ramp from 10th to the east side of the Crowchild Bridge, then they would move the off-ramp onto EB Memorial a little further to give traffic more space to weave in and out.

I wish the city would buy that slumlord dive of an apartment complex by university drive and then extend 3 lanes all the way through. This improvement over the bridge etc. is going to be great and all, but you'll still get the 3 lanes into 2 slowdown eventually.

That's part of the longer term work they showed off last year. It's definitely not as simple as buying that building though, cause all the bridges and walls around there would have to be removed and replaced. It's a much bigger reconstruction project than the widening they're doing this time.

To get to the SW, I will be using Sarcee or 14th St.

Leave Sarcee alone. Stay on Crowchild, it will be fine. Stay away.

Thank you very much for this. I was wondering what the heck was going on and how long this would last for.

In the bridges/roadways PDF, they say they're rehabbing the bridges and adding an extra lane to Crowchild. Are they adding an extra lane to the bridges too or just the roadway?
