I had one my worst delivery cost / brokerage fee recently with UPS.

Item cost: $55
Delivery: $33
Customs: $33

Honestly thought the shipping was through USPS so I thought I was already paying the customs fee. Was not very happy about the shipping cost as it was so I was 100% pissed when I paid the customs fee.

Have been burned by UPS before on brokerage, never again.

I think the area you live makes a difference too. USPS (Canada Post) and FedEx Express are both pretty good in my neighborhood.

FedEx Ground and DHL are insane... if you're not home they try to get you to go to the airport to pick up your package.

Ugh. Was hoping my bump of the thread would get my recent question answered.

I am assuming somewhere on the inter webs there is the CP equivalent of a board talking about import and duty fees.

Lastly, Have you called fedex to ask the question?

My issue with FedEx is that they only attempt one delivery with signature required items and if you aren't home you have to drive all the way near the airport to pick up your item. That makes them a glorified post office box delivery service where there's only one post office box for everyone and it's in the far NE. DHL is like this as well but they have drop off locations in each corner of the city so you don't have to go far to pick up the package. At least UPS will do three attempts before making you go to their depot to pick up.

I only found info about getting the advancement fee waived for collecting GST, which they confirmed on the phone. I don’t know enough about shipping and customs jargon to intelligently ask the question about other fees.

I got screwed a few years ago on some shoes I bought online from Germany. They charged way more in duties than they should have. I just want some option to always default to “self clear”. The other thing is, if a merchant offers free shipping and I give my own Fedex account number, does that mean I now pay for shipping or is it still free?

I am lucky I am pretty close to the airport, so if something ends up there, I am okay, but if I have to go to the airport anyway, I could just do the self clearing option, which Fedex or any other shipper makes it a pain to do.

You can also use the UPS website to authorize them to leave it somewhere (front door, back gate, etc) without a signature.

Only after the first delivery attempt and a package where a signature is not required. However anything from the US usually requires their $$$ brokerage fees to which you have to leave a cheque for them to leave the package.

I have been able to do it for Amazon packages before the first delivery attempt. I can't comment on leaving a cheque...that sounds like a pain in the ass though.

I lust put the check in an envelope and put it in our little mail box at the front door. I have noticed that UPS is starting to deliver packages to my area later in the day (after 4:00) so that hasn't been as much an issue that last couple of years.

dhl seems to have a good online set up for paying duties and then opting to not have to sign for the package, plus they notify you quickly electronically when you stuff is going to be delivered.

not sure if theis makes them the best, but it is nice

Fedex loves to send you a bill for $12 dollar brokerage fees that you have no idea about.

And they'll keep sending it every month for 10 years till you pay.

8+ business days to get a parcel to me from it's arrival in Canada. That's after shipping began in the US on Feb 20. I mean, that's excessive -- isn't it?
Oh man - I opened this thread, did not realize it was bumped and read this response. All I could think was "you waited until October when you expected your package in March to ask if there might be an issue?!"

Interesting responses...

I get stuff from the UK and the Netherlands in 3 days with DHL...

UPS is great in my area, I have no issues.

If you want something lost or to take forever (2 weeks to ship across Canada) then go Canada Post.

USPS, I've used in a limited sense.
