Tell me about Rio de Janiero, Brazil

I'm looking hard into going in August for about 9 days. Flight and hotel should be about $1500 cdn + $130 for the visa. Having said that, I'm sure some here have gone.


What was the vibe like and was it safe (assuming you have your wits about you)?
What were some of the things you did while there?

Was there for world cup 2014. must sees are a favela tour. Copacabana beach. Sugarloaf mountain and Christ the Redeemer. Other than those I was in pubs watching football eating cheesy chips (fries with cheese on top)

I loved it there. I didn't feel scared at all when we were there in 2011. Hung out a lot at Ipanema beach, did all the touristy stuff Renee mentions above. Don't go near the beaches at night.
