Recovery of threatened trout taking too long: conservationists

http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...nservationists

Conservation groups are calling for immediate action to help threatened trout in Alberta after a review showed most streams and rivers in the Oldman watershed are still being negatively impacted by development.

The disturbances range from logging, off-highway vehicle use, stream crossings, oil and gas development, coal mining, roads and dam operations.

Westslope cutthroat trout, which have been listed as a threatened species in Alberta for years and were listed federally in March 2013, have experienced a decline in numbers due to habitat loss, over-harvesting and the introduction of non-native species. It’s believed the fish now inhabit about five per cent of their original distribution.

The groups have similar concerns about bull trout, which are already classified as threatened in Alberta and still under review to be assessed as a federal species at risk.

Went fishing for the first time this year at Chain Lakes. Wasn't able to catch any trout today but was close. Had a few bites but was too slow to hook them. Gonna go fishing during the free weekend on July 11th and 12th. Does Anybody know of any other Good Trout places to go to thats close to Calgary?

What kind of fishing are you doing? Trolling, casting spinners from shore, fly fishing?

Sweet thread! I am a huge fly fishing addict. I've been fly fishing the bow for over 10 years now and have pretty much fished every stretch in the city. Foshizzle, I caught my first brown in Riverbend so you are right on some very trouty water.

I found last year to be quite difficult to fish. The flood probably displaced a lot of fish. The only good thing that came from the flood was that it was a new river! The structure changed so much that I'm excited to go scouting for new spots.

I was out earlier this week by the Sue Higgins bridge and the surface action was ok. I thought there should have been more because the caddis were relentless and massive stoneflies were emerging. I only managed one rainbow in 3 hours.

I would totally be down for a CP fly fishing meet on the Bow. A few of us experienced guys can help out a few newbies learn the ropes.

Lots of stonefly action on the Bow right now. Down at Policeman's golden stones and the ones with the dark bellies.

I just stocked up on some dry flies for the summer. I ordered online from this local business: https://www.ickyflyworks.ca a buck a fly. I never pay more than a buck a fly.

If you head down to Montana ever, you can get flies for $0.50 at the North Forty in Great Falls. They say they're discontinued, but the fish have no idea!

I've never fished anywhere but Alberta and BC. I would love to go down to Montana. I heard the trout aren't as big as the ones in the Bow.

We're pretty lucky to have the Bow here where a 18"-20" trout is "small".

This heat is shutting the fish down early. I was at Policeman's at 5 o'clock this morning, it was already 20 degrees and the fishing wasn't great. Aiming for 4 am tomorrow.

Thanks Neeper for the link to the buck a fly site, ordered some today.

Please send me PM - got a new iPhone and lost some contacts. We should round up Slava and head out to Frenchman's Creek.

I admit. I've been looking for mostly surface action.

What time of day are you fishing? The surface action using caddis patterns is quite good, but not until after about 9 pm.

I gave a number of browns and rainbows sore lips last night.

A group of us were out on Parade Day in drift boats from 22X to MacKinnon. We had heard that the fishing hadn't been great and that the water was too warm (so much so that there had been some dead fish in the river). However, we had a very good day fishing nymphs in the deep runs. Probably 10-20 fish hooked each with about half of them getting off from crazy acrobatic fighting. Most of them were stocky extremely heathly rainbows in the 17-19 inch range. No surface activity to speak of, but I think if you are willing to nymph fish, there is good fishing to be had. Fish caught on stonefly (Jimmie Legs) and leech patterns, with some on beadhead Hare's Ears.

I've been dry fly fishing late in the evening. From about 8 to 11.

I'll get back to nymphing some deep runs in the mean time.
