We were talking about some of the troubles a lot of native children have and what we could do to help. I was thinking, 'well, they can face a lot of issues at home with addiction, alcohol, gangs, etc. Maybe we could get them off the reserve for a bit and into a healthier environment. Give them a better education, perhaps.' I basically reinvented residential schools do I don't have a clue what can be done about any of the problems. My kids should have a way better chance at finding solutions with where they're starting from.
Why not encourage this same open thinking to Dogs??

Im just pulling your chain but it is nice to see that you aren't completely naive of learning and adjusting to culture change and encouraging your children to not grow up with the same biases you did.

The school system has really sparked a lot of interest in native culture for my kids.
That's good to hear. Without education, the victims and their heirs will continue to have their dignity challenged, and without dignity there can't be forgiveness and a desire to turn the page and move on. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to be a native whose family was affected by this system and have it completely unacknowledged by the majority of the general population.

When we were in Inuvik this summer we stoped by the library for some internet action. This frail ancient lady, probably 4 foot tall, could barely walk, sat down next to my wife. She couldn't speak, but wrote on a piece of paper "I was in a residential school". My wife apologized, and gave her a hug. She didn't want anything, other than to be acknowledged. More of that would go a long way, I think.

Your wife is awesome.

The entire situation makes me sad. When I was 10/11 years old, my two best friends were Cree. I wish I could reconnect with them, I wonder if their Mom had to survive that. She was an incredible woman, about 4'10", she'd go hunting every fall and get a moose. They'd clean it in the garage and then freeze the meat for the winter. Hardest working people I've ever known.

Machines may have spoiled the Tragically Hip's Man Machine Poem tour for a lot of fans this summer.

Two-thirds of the tickets for the band's landmark tour were snapped up by brokers and automated software, known as bots, CBC Marketplace has learned.

As a result, actual fans were able to buy less than a third of tickets at face value from Ticketmaster when they went on sale to the general public. This doesn't take into account other tickets that were set aside for VIPs, such as the band, promoters, venues and other insiders.

"The odds are absolutely stacked against the fan," said Joe Berchtold, chief operating officer of Live Nation, the world's largest tour promoter and owner of Ticketmaster, which sold tickets for the Hip's final tour.

"Probably a third of the tickets went to bots, another third went to brokers who were just like fans, pounding away at the keyboard, but better trained, more aggressive at it, and maybe a third of them went to fans."

"There's a big problem, and the big problem starts with bots."
Quote:
And yet, despite using security measures such as CAPTCHA, which asks users to enter a word seen in an image, Ticketmaster cannot stop all bots from getting through.

"Every year we block about five billion bots trying to attack our Ticketmaster system," Berchtold said, "but even if we're 99 per cent effective, that's 100 a minute that get through our system."

Bots and brokers are only a couple ways fans are at a disadvantage.

Former Ticketmaster CEO Nathan Hubbard wrote in TheRinger.com: "Fans have known for decades that, whenever they buy tickets for concerts or games, the deck is almost sadistically stacked against them."

Others in the industry agree it's an open secret.

"Everybody in the industry knows that most of the best tickets for most of the shows are never sold to the public," said Don Vaccaro, CEO of TicketNetwork, which runs a resale site similar to StubHub.

He says many are sold in premium packages, reserved in advance of the general sale by primary sellers like Ticketmaster. The packages offer a prime seat along with parking or promotional materials like a signed photo for a sizeable markup.

"By the time the actual sale to the general public happens, 90 per cent of the tickets might be gone."

I was about to point out how I thought it was pretty weird that the strombo show may their own patch...

Then I realized how much I loved it.

The Secret Path is such a beautiful album, I make sure I listen to it at least once a week if not more. What a beautiful piece of art

Started listening to this a couple hours ago on eastern time zone (started at 8pm here - radio 2). It's been pretty good, but a few gripes:

- George went way overboard with "Strombo Show" references - saying it at least twice between each song for the first hour. He's also putting on a stupid moody voice.
- Disappointed to get such a straight ahead "rock" version of Grace, Too. So much more would have been possible with that song.

I hope the songs are available streaming when this is done. Really liked some of the female vocals.

Grace, too was the only song I've downright hated tonight.

Holy Strombo ego-mania. Wanna listen again and play a drinking game, though I don't think I'd survive if I drank at every "Strombo Show", "My house", or "my living room".

To top it all, he ends the program by thanking Gord in an interview, who responds "GEORGE! thank you." I don't doubt that it was a calculated move to have the last clear word be his own name.

On a positive note, I really dug Nautical Disaster.

Show is available here for listening again, although I'm not having much luck getting it to play. I'm guessing the servers are getting hammered.

Sadies doing Long Time Running was a highlight for me. I missed the end so I need to go back, if only for the Rheostatics.
