The pro controller is basically a must for any game that is not a party game or a turn-based RPG.

I can’t justify $90, but I may be able to justify $60. I don’t hate the joy-cons, but how does everyone like their pro controller?

An alternative to the Pro controller, these work great and if you are playing the classic games. Costs less too.

Grabbed a pro controller in-store at Walmart this morning for $50. Was already sold out online.
Feels great in hand - really impressed with how it feels so far. Haven't really tried it out yet but seems like a good buy in advance of smash bros coming out.

The Switch eShop has a ton of games on sale as well, and many are actually decent discounts too. I picked up the Azure Striker Gunvolt Pack at 50% off as I wanted some more Mega Man Zero style gameplay in my life.

Just wait for a few weeks when you realize you haven't charged the pro controller and you wonder what kind of magic this is. The battery life of the pro controller is crazy.

Ok, I’m looking to get a Switch for the family for Christmas, what all do I need to get to have a setup for 4 players for games like Super Mario Party, MarioKart 8, etc?

Basically, the minimum is a Switch Unit (which comes with 2 JoyCons), and an extra controller set.
Each controller set comes with 2 JoyCons, which can be used as a single controller (when paired with the Unit or a cradle)/held apart for one player, or used as 2 separate little teeny controllers for most of the 4 player games.
JoyCon sets are like $80 too so most people just buy an extra pair to go with the pair that comes with the system and leave it at that. You could in-theory buy 3 extra sets and everyone gets full controllers but kids have tiny hands anyway.

I believe Mario Party has a bundle that comes with an extra Joy-Con set, so you could get that and the Switch and be pretty set.

This and it's a really good deal if you can still find one.
Mario Party: $80 regular price
Joy Con: $100 regular price
Mario Party + Joy Con Bundle: $130 regular price
So saving $50 buy buying them together, ended up grabbing one as a joint gift for my niece and nephew for Christmas since it was such a good deal.

Just a word of warning about Mario Party and the controller situation as well. We have 2 pro controllers and a joy-con and thought we were set for Mario Party (there are 4 of us), but you can't use pro-controllers. So we had to buy a second set of joy-cons. Just a heads up.

Since a lot of people do seem to have just jumped on the Switch Bandwagon here are some of the top Switch games IMO:
The Classics
Super Mario Odyssey
Zelda BoTW
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Family Friendly/Multiplayer
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Pokemon Let's Go
Super Mario Party
Honorable Mention: Snipperclips Plus, Kirby Star Allies
New Surprises
Splatoon 2
Mario x Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (Personally my biggest surprise, and a huge fan of this game)
Honorable Mention: Starlink, Arms
More Mature Games
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Diablo 3
Honorable Mention: Bayonetta 2Pack, Doom, Skyrim
In terms of a more well rounded variety of games that are generally appealing the 10 listed (not including honorable mention) would probably be my Top 10 , not necessarily the 10 best games on the system but some of the more enjoyable ones that I think most people will enjoy. Plus I fully expect Super Smash Bros Ultimate to get added to that list as well next week.

To add to the list above, Smash Brothers Ultimate is out next week.
Under family friendly/Multiplayer I loved playing Overcooked/Overcooked2 as local multiplayer.
Lastly, the Switch has a ton of good games from the eshop (or whatever it's called). Pretty much every good indie game is on there. I haven't tried too many of them but I've heard good things about Into the Breach and Hollow Knight.

Just to add some games to that list above too:
Sonic Mania
Octopath Traveler
Overcooked / Overcooked 2
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Wolfenstein II
Undertale
Dark Souls
Fortnite
Paladins
Warframe
Indie Gems
Hollow Knight
Stardew Valley
Celeste
Shovel Knight

Add Golf Story to the indie gems too - forgot how much I liked that throwback to old Mario Golf games.
