Default Purchasing Game Server

Has anyone in Calgary had any experience doing this? Specifically pay a company to host a game server.

If so, what company is good for people located in Calgary? What places offer the best pings and prices? I ping about 35-40 to nfoservers. Any suggestions?

There's lots in the US. For Calgary I'd recommend servers either in Seattle or Chicago, I get sub 50 ping to Chicago usually and even less to Seattle.

What game?

Dabbled with this in the days when Counterstrike was at its' prime. Seattle was the way to go then.

I will go with photon and recommend to get a server from Seattle or Chicago. They had the best pings for me.

I wish I could be more help. I was part of a clan, and while I wasn't the one who owned/rented the server, I was an admin and had full access. We changed hosts a couple of times, due to "leadership" changes. I can't remember the names of companies we used though. Things are probably a little different now than they were 5 years ago.

I would assume that there's companies that do that sort of thing, you just pay them $x and you get a 24 slot server.

You could probably just get the appropriate server yourself (i.e. rent a dedicated box) and admin it yourself, but not sure if that would end up being cheaper or more expensive.

Yeah, I was thinking seattle is probably the best as well. I was thinking of just getting a dedicated server so I could load all the games I play onto it and consistently get decent pings.

For games, l4d2, tf2, bf3 (when i get it), and similar FPS games.

I've only ever had minor dealings with Trinity Games, seemed pretty decent, not sure how competitively priced they are but another option.

The gameservers.com site has servers for less than a dollar per slot, and even has free servers, might be easier and cheaper than leasing a dedicated box. Though I'm not really sure what the memory and CPU requirements are for game servers.
