How do you pronounce it? In my mind it almost sounds like the way my Aussie accent would say Bicycle, like Bye-skul?

I tweeted him as well. Patrick is a pretty solid pbp guy, I could see him doing NHL games.

I totally agree. We were discussing how he'd do and what it would be like when he was interviewing for the job. He knows his stuff, and has a real interest. He talked about bringing more stuff going in around the island such as mentioned high school hockey scores, Jr A, Jr B etc.

I honestly thought he'd do a good job. When the last guy left (took a job with CTV mid-season) they had an old veteran fill in who was good but understandably rusty.

Then Pat did his first game and hasn't looked back.

Hard to believe he's only been doing pbp for about 3 months now.

How does one get into PBP? Did he practice out loud just watching games or something? I'm curious, I think maybe I'd love to do it one day haha

He did a traditional style interview, and then they played video of a game that he had to call. He said it was odd and didn't feel good, but it's also not a natural way to call the game.

From there he shadowed the veteran who was filling in while the station looked for a permanent replacement.

After a few games, he had a 3 game trial (I think it was 3).

After his first game they made him an offer.

Getting is tough.

I know two other pbp guys very well (ones Dieppe Commandos of the MJHL and the other the Truro Bearcats of the same league).

For the guy that does the Commandos he had a connection with Rogers that he talked hockey with. Got to the point that his connection set him up to do analysis for the Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL) broadcasts. That turned into colour for Rogers TV hockey games (QMJHL, MJHL, CIS). That lead to play by play for Dieppe.

The guy that does Truro Bearcats games works in the newsroom for the local radio station there. He's also a big hockey fan, so when they needed someone to fill in for the odd game, he jumped at the chance. So he was the fill in guy that turned into the main guy.

I'm no expert but if you really wanted to get into it, I'd try talking to radio stations that broadcast local teams. Demonstrate that you know your stuff about the team and the league. Perhaps get a chance to do analysis after the games or colour. Offer to fill in if there's a sickness or schedule conflict (easier to do with teams that only broadcast home games as their pbp guys generally do it on the side).

From there you can apply when opportunities arise with experience and a portfolio.

Don't think this has been posted yet, but slick goal from Poirier on March 21: (warning shakey video camera footage)

Hard to hear but sounds like the locals had a Poirier chant after his goal.

I'll double check the dates later but about 3 seems right. He was a mid-season replacement.

As for the game, I'm now at the bar drinking my sorrows away.

At Steel City if you want to join.

Possibly, but in junior if the home team gets eliminated it's not uncommon to give overagers stars as a token jesture.

Mind you I didn't check the stars. It's possible whoever picked them was drunk as well.

Got to meet Poirier after the game. Really nice guy, got his autograph and told him I can't wait to see him on a line with Monahan. Obviously he was all smiles.

Presently it would be Halifax vs Gatineau next round ... but that's assuming all the teams leading their current series hold on.

Loooong bus trips.

Well in fairness it would be a 2-3-2 series and the teams would fly.

Drove past YQY today and snapped this with my phone thinking "what the frack is that?!" I'm assuming it's Gatineau's charter as it's the only thing that makes sense.

Cape Breton flew Ottawa to Sydney on a Jazz charter Dash 8-100.

But yes, regular season (and Cape Breton drove to Gatineau for game 1) is a long arse drive.
