Default High River Sunset Drive-In

I didn't see a post for this, so I thought I'd start one.
It looks like the Sunset Drive-in in High River is set to open this weekend.
Tickets available through their website.
https://highriversunsetdrivein.ca
I'm not crazy about the showing this weekend, and tickets seem a little steep unless you've got a carload, but I've been eagerly waiting for this to open.
I used to love going to the Corral 4 Drive-In back in the day.

My daughter and her friends went to the one in Cochrane last night. She said it was fun.

The price is a bit steep at $40 per carload, no matter how many people are in the vehicle. That said i'm sure they'll fill the place. Plus there will be food trucks on location.

Quote:
Owner Jeff Langford says they're holding a special opening Friday, August 14 for sponsors and volunteers to raise some money for the Call of the West Museum and Eamon's Garage, and then opening the doors to the public Saturday, August 15.

"People can now actually go on (our website) now and buy tickets now for Saturday night. We're hoping to get a bunch of local people out to get this started. Then we're up and going, we're rolling. We're going to have food trucks there. Of course social distancing, we have to make sure all the COVID rules are in place. It's going to be great!"

Langford says they won't fill it to capacity though.

"130 is basically our COVID number of where we are very comfortable. The trial run tells us a lot more too of how we fit cars in and how things work. So we're keeping it at our 130 car mark, you know see how that works, we can increase our occupancy higher than that for sure."

The screen is built on 5 sea cans that are stacked one on top of the other and welded together

The owners are using an old ambulance where the projection is stored in the back

I would have liked to see them double it to take advantage of widescreen. The folks at the back are going to be squinting. I don't think I'd travel from Calgary to watch something like this that looks cobbled together for $40.

I also think he might be too late on this. Okotoks has been running a drive-in for the last couple weeks and Telus Spark is doing one all summer (digital LED instead of projector I believe). That's going to eat up some of the people from Calgary would be interested in this.

Hopefully that sucker is anchored well. Does it get windy in High River?

I didn't even look at the movies they're showing. It's a double feature I guess but those movies definitely aren't attractions.

Maybe if they got better movies, however if I'm paying $40, I'm going to Spark or Cochrane instead

I suspect they are targeting families with this movie.

I get that, but couldn't they find a more current movie then one from 1977? I thought it was bad when I was a kid, I can't imagine what kids today think of it.

If anyone has Prime there's a decent doc called At The Drive-In

No kidding. Looking at these photos makes me incredibly uneasy.

I remember hearing an interview with the guy who was setting this up and he said that was one of the big concerns and they were consulting with some structural engineers in for that purpose.

Looks like it's set up on piles, and those cans are surprisingly light when empty

With Halloween around the corner they're playing some classic family horror movies. They're also partnering with non-profits for the showings. On Friday, October 16th they're showing Hocus Pocus and Arachnophobia with a portion of the profits going to the Leighton Art Centre.

Need a bigger screen than that if the place gets packed.
