Mite b cool. The guest curators are a great idea but GY!BE has been their only selection that's really blown my socks off, typically I only really start getting hyped once the first announcement roster drops. Solid pick though and Sled's always a blast.

I'm excited to see Dirty Projectors, Deerhoof, Shabazz Palaces, Cherry Glazerr, Wand, Slow, Bat Fangs!

This is only 8% of the eventual line-up to come.

I note Local 510 is closing, and Sled Island has lost a venue.

Could that be the same 'Slow' from yesteryear? 'Have not been the same' is one of my faves.
Hope it's them!

Most of the announcements are a complete flatline for me but Mount Eerie by himself almost makes up for all the rest. He and Tim Hecker were the two acts I was most crushed about missing from the 2013 cancellation and both finally return this year.

Slow
Vancouver, BC

It’s not hyperbole to say that at one point during their three-year run, Slow were the most talked-about band in Canada. From 1983 to 1986, “the most notorious rock band in Vancouver” earned themselves a reputation for their unhinged punk rock and incendiary live show.

The latter was the undoing of the band, when in 1986 they managed to shut down the first (and last) Festival of Independent Recording Artists at Expo 86. It was a legendary kiss-off that landed Slow in national headlines and drew the ire of concerned parents across Canada.

Yeah he's a great performer. Is this the first time he's been scheduled to appear since the flood? I swear he was here since then.

Anyway, Mount Eerie and Slow are the only two I'm excited about.

Many of these aren't new, or at least have been used off and on in the past. Studio Bell/King Eddy were venues last year. Containr has been used a few times though not since 2015 (as I can remember at least). Central Memorial Park is where they do their Sunday afternoon performances before the Wrap-Up show in the evening. Max Bell had some roller derby event last year and I assume is returning this year. One Yellow Rabbit has a semi-regular performance they usually put on for the festival at Big Secret, though again that's not every year. Don't know about the others off the top of my head, although Jack Singer is also pseudo-official venue this year as well for the Owen Pallett orchestral performance.

If he has I'm kicking myself for missing it, I've been keeping an eye on his touring announcements ever since the flood.

Have to say my interest level went up a lot after going through the sample playlist of the acts I was unfamiliar with. Getting serious Have A Nice Life vibes from The Body.

I trust these curators so much. I look forward just as much to the bands I don't know.

Cherry Glazerr will be cool.
I was really hoping for Shannon and the Clams or Jacuzzi Boys, or The Coathangers.
Maybe in the next round of band reveals.

So I've never been to Sled Island - previously I've always been on vacation.

Any recommendations? Should I buy a pass (or a plus pass) and just hit up all the shows I can?

I've never bothered with the plus pass, I've gone to five Sleds with a regular pass so far and there's been two occasions within all of them where the line-cutting of the plus pass would have helped (stood in the pissing rain for about 90 minutes in 2013 to catch the second half of Swans' set at Dickens. Felt good, man. Also last year they reached capacity for Hailu Mergia while I was in line, but about five minutes into the set most people waiting bailed the line and they let the rest of us inside anyway) and none of the bonuses seem like they're worth the extra price.

Typically I just buy the regular pass at the early-bird price with the cash I inevitably end up getting over christmas. Even buying it before the lineup gets announced and even on years where I've considered the headlining lineup to be really weak I always get a complete schedule full of great shows out of it. I work my way through the sample playlist generator on their site as act announcements roll in and make note of whatever sounds like something worth seeing. Once the final schedule gets released and I plug in all my marked acts it always ends up filling my itenerary to capacity. You've missed the discounts by this point but I fully recommend grabbing a pass even if you do it blind. It's the one time of the year Calgary reliably gets top-notch alternative acts to perform here so I'm always all-in with it.

Consider volunteering, pre-festival or during the festival. Earn a free pass and meet great people and artists.

As far as "some of the best Canadian bands around", Peach Kelli Pop (as per their tour dates) is one of them and I'm hoping for Needles//Pins and Woolworm to make the trip from Vancouver.
