The countdown is on, 300 seconds to the elimination of the Hurricanes.

You got the sense that no one wanted to be the guy to do it there. Not enough urgency outside of Martinook and McGinn.

Carolina has a very good team. They need some more killer instinct. Interesting to see what kind of moves, if any, they make this summer. They're not far off, but they need a bit more.

They need to worry about their UFAs before they worry about improving. I bet Dougie moves on they apparently aren't willing to pay market value.

Dundon won't pay any of the UFA's market value. His biggest loss will be Brindamour if he doesn't pay him as a top coach.

They don't have too many UFAs of note. Obviously Dougie is the big one, other than that it's Martinook and McGinn. Their young goalie is a RFA. They're actually set up pretty well. They have a bit of cap space right now, if Dougie walks they'll have a bit of cash to play with.

Pretty tough for them to lose Dougie and improve this offseason IMO

Perhaps, but cap space and an expansion draft coming up, they have options. They have some solid d-men already under contract, I'd upgrade the forwards anyways. Who knows they may end up re-signing him anyways.

I could see Dougie staying in Carolina as long as they make him a reasonable offer. He has had 2 stops so far in the NHL where he didn't appear to fit in and was traded away, he appears to fit in perfectly with the Canes and they are a contender. I could see him taking a bit less to stay, either way he is going to get 50-60+ million dollars.

Seems like he's been around forever but he's still only 27 years old. Given how plenty of defensemen are playing well into their mid-30's I think he's a guy that will be well worth the contract he receives as he's just hitting his stride projecting to over 60 points the past few seasons. The fact that he's not a party guy is more a Flames issue than a Dougie issue.

Like, say, a Nikita Kucherov level of player at no hit to their cap?
Again, if TB goes on to win this, it will be with an asterisk as far as I'm concerned. They're playing with a roster that nobody else can possibly have. Adding one extra top 10 talent on top of everything else will win you more games than not in a series.

Is everyone forgetting that Chicago added Kane in the playoffs after he came back from a broken collar bone in 2015... thats $10.5M that resulted in a cup win...

I don't think you can fault the teams for exploiting a loophole that exists. This is something the Flames could also do if they were in a similar situation. The league does need to look into fixing this as losing a player long term to injury shouldn't result in a playoff advantage.

Also, to exploit the loophole you actually have to have a Kucherov or Kane on your roster.
Not to mention, said player has to have an injury, the injury has to be some time before the TDL, you have to be able to make the deals to get the additional help, and then you have to make the POs without that guy.
It wasn’t Kucherov that was the addition at no cap hit. It was whoever they brought in. And TB was not even the only team to do this this year. Toronto did it with Anderson. Foligno, Rittich and Hutton put them over the cap but for LTIR. Pens did it, Caps did it. It’s how the Blues signed Hoffman (with Tarasenko on LTIR).

Kane still played 61 games that year. 3/4 of his AAV counted against the cap. And it was actually his last year on a 6.3M deal. CHI was able to add a few more depth players at TDL...not really the same at all
