Cycling Thread 2
Is there a link between the Bow River Pathway and Bearspaw section? Was hoping to do a ride to Glenbow Ranch, and I thought that was all connected now, bur Google is showing a gap there.

There is no legal route however some have trespassed through there and had to face off with the angsty landowner. others, I hear, have made the attempt along the River banks which may be considered crown land? Not sure if that is true though.

Yeah, I have heard that, but there were some signs around Glenbow Ranch that made it seem like the route was completed.

Hey! He put a lot of work into that and wanted to share it with more people. Nobody visits the horse racing thread and it’s pretty hard to cultivate any interest that way. Imagine actually getting in a huff about seeing a horse racing post ... in the cycling thread. Oh dear, what a crime.

Please don’t let this thread devolve into bickering like the other threads on CP. Don’t let disc vs rim brakes and horse races ruin a good thing.

I recently had my bike stolen and can't find an equivalent replacement. I will wait until next year to find it.
In fear of not having a bike at all due to low inventory at stores, I bought a cheap road bike (Supercycle Circuit) from Canadian Tire to get me through the summer. My only beef with it is the brakes. They are located in a tough position and even when I use the drop bars, I still can't brake confidently in most downhill situations.
Does anybody have a solution?

Can you post a picture of the handlebars? Without removing the bar tape you can adjust them a bit. There may be a few options.

can you unwrap the bar tape and see if you can move the brakes? Usually there's a tensioning type bolt/screw and if you loosen that you can move the brakes up or down the bar before re-tightening and re-wrapping. Since it's a crappy-tire bike you'll also probably need to check the cable routing and angles, perhaps lube up the cables inside the housing, and for sure check the pads are located properly and snugged into place.

Oh, for those wanting to follow the Giro d'Italia... besides the live blogs / tickers, there is a video feed on Tiz-Cycling live stream. Just be VERY careful not to click any of the side bar advertisements and such. Usually the "Backup 1080p" gives me the best image and english audio.

Does anyone know where to buy a dutch-style bike (Oma or otherwise) in or around Calgary?
Also not looking for a $1,000+ one. I just want a steel, strudy, upright, utility bike

The GCN+ subscription was worth it when they had the 50% sale. Would have still be worth it for $60. The documentaries they've put on there are great as well.
Between it and Flobikes I have access to 95% of the races I want to watch.

Sounds like a 2022 type of situation then.
Bike Bike has lots of that genre.

Another simple thing you might try is replacing the brake pads themselves. Sometimes the cheap ones are made with a rubber compound that simply doesn't bite the rim well (or is dried out if the bike has been sitting around for an age).
I used to use a brand called Kool Stop that worked really well and wouldn't break the bank. But I'd definitely try messing with the tension first.
Also, since it's a CT-assembled bike, make sure you go over it and tighten everything before you go on any long rides.

I’ll second this. GCN+ was the best $30 I spent this year

Yes, check EVERYTHING. You'll likely end up rotating the bars to suit your reach, adjusting brake/shifter angles, seat fore/aft, checking all quick-releases tension, even going so far as to check wheels are true, tires are pumped, etc...
