What games he's playing would help determine how much power / money...

I would suggest having him build one on his own so that he earns the fruits of his labour.

I currently have some parts if you're interested, will sell for $250:
Case
AMD FX-6100, mounted on MoBo
8gb DDR3
Asus GTX 570

So what you'll need:
PSU
Hard Drive w/ OS

Can post pics if you're interested.

I would suggest trying redflagdeals to see what's up.

There's Asus and Lenovo laptops and a Dell desktop on the first page right now. It'll give you an idea of what's out there and their costs.

However, the biggest expense for a gaming computer is going to be the video card. They are in demand for bitcoin mining and are sold out everywhere. A pre-built system is your best bet for finding something but as with all things in demand, you'll pay a premium.

I wouldn't buy a pre-built computer, especially if it's going to be for gaming

There's probably a few guys on CP who could offer a lot of help in the tech talk forum on getting a PC built, I'd make a post over there

Your best option is going to be to buy the parts you need at Memory Express and have them build it for you. Unless you want to do it with your son, which is pretty easy to do especially with thousands of guides on YouTube you could follow

Ask him if he wants a laptop or a desktop. I might be selling my 2019 Razer Blade 15 soon.

This is good advice at any other time, but with the current GPU shortage - pre-builts are the way to go right now. Not really any other way to make sure you get a 30 series card otherwise.
