Since I've been mentioned twice, people turn a blind eye to China's human rights problems because of money. How is that an ignorant statement?

One GM on one NBA team said one thing about Hong Kong and the entire league had to apologize in fear of losing the lucrative Chinese market. How is that not due to money?

Mark Cuban has also been mentioned recently. He condemns human rights violations but is ok doing business with China? How is that reasonable?

That said, pragmatically, there are very few countries in the world that don't practice human rights violations on the daily, including the US so it's a difficult proposition.

China should be pressured relentlessly to, at the very least, drop its objections to Taiwan participating fully in such international forums as the World Health Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
I would like to see an independent Taiwan, but I totally disagree that Taiwanese political indepedence should supercede peaceful co-development between China and the West or be a necessary condition for it.

People in Taiwan are both the victims and the beneficiaries of living on an important strategic location for economic and security interests in the region. It was a strategically important location for the Dutch, the Japanese, and the fleeing Nationalist army in the past for similar reasons as those that make it important to the tensions between China and the US now. If it weren't, the US would have peaced out decades ago. The people of Taiwan have faced turmoil again and again for centuries because of this. It sucks, but Taiwan may always face difficulties like these as long as there are greater powers vying for control in the region.

The One China policy and diplomatic ambiguity in a context of peaceful co-development between China and the West has actually provided Taiwan the space for its democracy and economy to develop peacefully for decades. Taiwan could do worse than a context of peaceful co-development between China and the West. The rest of the world could also do far worse than peaceful co-development of China and the West.

Edit: Anyways, unless it's specifically about US involvement, I'm not going to be responding further. I'm sure nobody wants to take this thread further off the rails.

This is an interesting argument. Do you think South Korea has similarly benefitted from North Korea's One Korea policy? The One Korea is in existence unbeknownst to most people. It's is even in the names of the countries.

North Korea is called Choson, the historical name of Korea. And South Korea is called Daehan is which kind of a made of name meaning Great People. So South Korea is seen as a fake made up country while North Korea is the real Korea.

And the same with South Vietnam except it was corrupt and got run over.

So are these countries taking advantage of being propped up by the US against communism?

I am absolutely stunned. It wasn't even close. There were lines to vote here in Wichita well after 9 PM. Maybe some of the people screaming about their rights being taken away for the last 2 years aren't actually hypocrites? Maybe too simplistic of an explanation. Maybe the silent majority activated for once I don't know.

I have stuck myself in this place for almost 26 years now and this is really the first time anything encouraging has happened politically that I can recall.

Wait, Kansas Republicans put abortion on a single-issue referendum? FOOLS! MORONS! ABSOLUTE IDIOTS! Let me laugh at their stupidity!

... oh wait, it was the only way they could do it.

I don't think I know enough about the situation in Korea to really comment knowledgeably on it.

In terms of Taiwan and the US, saying they're "taking advantage" of the situation has a little bit of an exploitative connotation to it, whereas I think it's more fair to view it as them navigating the circumstances they find themselves in as best they can for their own development. The fact that the US has economic and security interests there, which are quite different from having any interest in the actual people of Taiwan, creates conditions for the Taiwanese to benefit in their own trade and security. That's just playing the hand they've been dealt imo, and in the past decades it has offered some good opportunities, but how it works in future decades is uncertain.

Maybe this is similar with South Korea. I don't know. North Korea and China are obviously very different countries to have to deal with though, for South Korea and Taiwan as well as for the US.

So I'm flying into Taiwan tomorrow... wish I didn't have to be apprehensive about a routine commercial flight. :/

Having an isolated vote on abortion seems like an extremely smart move for Kansas GOP. Now Kansas Republican-voters can keep voting for the GOP even if they support abortion, and the issue is settled for now.

Takes a weapon away from the Dems.

Its smart.. but they had to do it to ban abortion. It wasn't a political move.. it was necessary because their supreme court ruled that abortion was protected under the state constitution. So they would have had to amend the state constitution to ban it.

You're missing the point... Now they don't have to campaign against it.

I should point out that from what I understand, they held it this week in hopes they would win. The idea being that turnout would be low by the opposition because they didn't have anything else to vote for. And republicans in the area turn out pretty decent as most primaries are effectively the general due to the heavy conservative lean of the state.

The organizing effort against was very effective, and the supreme courts decision I think motivated a lot of people to vote that might not have otherwise.

Also that younger voters typically support abortion and many are not around in the summer.
