Can COVID-stricken Brazil host Copa America?
Questions surround controversial decision to award football tournament to Brazil, country with second-highest COVID death toll in the world.
https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/202...t-copa-america
Quote:
Until late last month, the 10-team, month-long tournament was to be, for the first time, co-hosted by two countries: Colombia and Argentina.
The former’s plans were scrapped on May 20 due to civil unrest. Ten days later, with COVID cases in Argentina having risen 54 percent, the country swapped its hosting rights for the unwelcome title of having the world’s fifth-worst coronavirus outbreak per capita.
Within 24 hours, COVID-ravaged Brazil was unveiled as the emergency solution.

Looked like no fans at the games I saw.

EURO is such a prestigious tournament. Hard for anyone to compete with it for viewers. There's folks in my office who aren't even soccer fans who are asking me about it and discussing matches.
They should do a total revamp of Copa IMO.
Make it North & South America (assuming Conmebol and Concacaf can get along) and make it a 16 team tournament, held every four years with rotating hosts. Four groups of four, then single game knockout. Like the Euro was prior to 2012. Qualifying can tweaked to make sense logistically.

They tried it with the Copa America Centenario in 2016. But you know how it is with the US and Mexico. They won't be involved unless it's hosted in the US or Mexico, mostly the US. The Gold Cup is never rotated, it's just a cash grab.

Unlimited substitution is CONMEBOL's solution as 8 Venezuelan players test Covid positive
https://www.newindianexpress.com/spo...t-2315604.html
Quote:
Meanwhile, three Bolivian players and a member of the team's technical staff tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of their Copa debut on Monday against Paraguay, the Bolivia soccer federation said late Saturday, adding that all were in isolation.
It was the latest bad news for the controversial, pandemic-battered South American championships, which kick off Sunday when Brazil play Venezuela in Brasilia.
The outbreak is unlikely to force the cancellation of any matches.
CONMEBOL said Friday it would allow teams unlimited substitutions for players who are ruled out because of positive Covid-19 results or contact with infected people.
Venezuela said it had called up 15 new players as emergency replacements.

Argentina up 1-0 at the half. Could be Messi’s first big national trophy?

There's been more dirt in the 35 minutes I've seen in this game than the whole of Euro.

Other than a lot of diving, this is a pretty exciting brand of soccer. Lots of attacking, both teams running hard at all times.

what can you say...so happy for Messi...
At the same time, Neymar outclassed him today by a wide margin I thought. Neymar will have more chances however, while Messi is approaching the end of his storied career.
truly the epitome of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in those pictures of Messi and Neymar after the game ended.
the embrace between Neymar and Messi after the game was truly touching

In the last minutes, it was hilarious watching Argentina literally trying to physically tackle Neymar. Like grabbing him and trying to throw him down to the ground tackle. And Neymar still came out of it with the ball.

Proving that when he chooses to, he can, in fact, say on his feet.

Haha, we said the exact same thing watching it.
It was hard to believe that was Neymar the way he got right back up.
A Neymar when he's winning vs Neymar when he's losing video of his tackle reactions would be funny to watch.
