I know if I were in the poster's shoes, and I want to at least still keep the family ties civil, I'd just suck it up, spend a weekend to pack up all their stuff, give them a call, and then drop it all off to them. Then I'd get the space all cleaned up, and never have to worry about their stuff irritating me again. Just not worth the continuing hassles and well worth it for a few hours of unappreciated work.

Anyway this is what we are currently doing. After the stuff sitting there forever, I've packed it up as is (e.g random piece of their scrap paper - it goes nicely in the box or bag with everything else) and are now delivering bags/boxes of it when we are scheduled to see them for whatever reason. I've dropped off about half of their stuff so far.
They weren't going to do it themselves obviously/apparently, so I just decided to do it myself.
While some in this thread thought I was giving myself ulcers, I was just generally disappointed in how things were. In short: I feel treated like a hotel, not as family. And for me that's quite disappointing, but to keep the peace on my wife's side I am just biting my tongue.
