CBC The National on 89 Cup Winning Flames

Hi all,

I saw this tv clip on tv and I thought I would post it. It's a quick look at Mike Vernon's early career as a goalie in Calgary and how he led the team to the 89 cup.

Looking at the footage, its amazing how small and athletic he was as a goalie. He was one of my favorites growing up. I always see him kicking around Dutton's at the Dome, great guy and a great Flame.

Yup Vernon was amazing!! He used to hang around 3 cheers on Electric Avenue so much he had his very own life size statue right in the bar. 3 cheers was a basement bar on Electric and as soon as you went down the stairs and around the corner Vernon was there to greet you. I wish taking pictures was popular back then would have loved a pic.

Some great vintage footage of Vernie... I wonder what happened to the (Vernon) statue that used to be in Flames Central (holding the Cup). Hope it found a good home somewhere...

They 89 team was a post/couple massive saves away from one of the biggest chokes of all time. Canucks had 74 points that season.
