Default NHL.com Power Rankings

I don't generally care too much about power rankings personally, but I was on NHL.com and there it was. So I decided to click on it to see where they had the Flames. Answer:

1) TBL
2) BOS
3) CAL

Whatever, sure. Boston has won 10 in a row, and points in 14. Nothing crazy there. Then I noticed that they explain how they do the rankings (a staff that of 13 that each ranks the teams as they see fit, and then they total the results). Then I noticed that they actually display everyone's rankings.

Turns out that Calgary had 7 second place votes and 5 third place votes, while Boston had 5 second place votes and 4 third place votes.

So how did Boston end up second? Because 1 dude - Brian Compton - had the Flames 11th. Eleventh.

Now I understand that people have different opinions, and that's fine. But how does the Deputy Managing Editor of NHL.com rationally come to the conclusion that the team in 2nd overall, with a 7 point lead on 3rd, is actually the 11th best team in the league?

Along with the obvious other top 6 teams, he also managed to rank NYI, WAS, CAR and VGK, as 7 through 10. Yes, NYI, the team the Flames just beat twice in a week (easily); CAR, a team 15 points behind them in the standings; and VGK, a team 18 points behind them in the same division (so closer to EDM than CAL), he thought should be ranked ahead of the Flames.

How does any professional come to this conclusion? Does this dude have some sort of history with the Flames?

(I know this isn't thread-worthy, but I just found it amazing)

These lists are ultimate troll jobs. Click-bate. Just do whatever they can to get people to share everything and get the advertising.

On Reddit it says he ranked the Flames third last week. Maybe it's just a bad input?

I've always found Power Ranking to be so dumb. But after an exhaustive Google search, I found here literally the one and only power rankings that matter. Not people voting who they think is best. The one true power ranking.

I looked over the votes the past few weeks and he's generally had the Flames 2nd or 3rd. I think this week he just decided to arbitrarily vote based on TDL activity as he has NSH, VGK, SJ and WPG all above the flames.

Yeah it either has to be trade deadline related or a mistake with the rankings.

That is probably the most likely reasoning, ignoring NYI anyway. And suggesting CAR passed them is also rather... imaginative as well.

Kind of a shock that the Deputy Managing Editor of a website did something that would drive traffic to that website.

Pretty coincidental if it wasn't intended.

Anything less than 11th, and Boston doesn't finish 2nd. By voting the Flames 11th, they ended up with one less point than the Bruins. So almost certainly intentional.

As Millions would say.... hmmmmm

I feel like no matter how well the team is doing, people look for things to complain about.

I like how McIndoe does his rankings, which is a "best chance to win the cup", rather than a "best team in the league" opinion piece. It takes into account playoff matchups, injuries and guys who will ultimately return from injury, locker room drama... everything that might cause you to win or lose a playoff series. In other words, you're almost never going to see the Leafs in it, because in order to win the cup they have to go through the Bruins and Lightning. Even the Bruins are a tough sell for basically the same reason.
