Depending on how ‘statsy’ you want to get, a regression line could demonstrate the cutoff for different points in the season. Eg: 5 points below the line in game 10 is different than in game 70.

Using the crispy graph and the 96 black line as a reference, it would likey result in an upwards sloped line, existing below the black line. Vice versa (1 in 20 miss the playoffs if below this line) would result in a downward sloped line, existing above the black line. You would get a cone shape.

I've only run the data for the 2017-18, so I can't draw any conclusions or predictions yet, as the sample size is too small. I did find some things that I thought were interesting. For clarity's sake when I say game(s) I mean where the team is after the conclusion of a game played.

Vegas was the only team to spend the entire season above the black line, as they won their first three games. Tampa Bay only spent the conclusion of game #2 below the black line.

Minnesota was below the black line for 47 of the first 49 games, including the first 30. They were above the black line the rest of the year, starting after game #50. Of the playoff teams, Anaheim spent the most games below the black line, with 64. They were not permanently above the black line until the conclusion of game #73.

Florida did not make the playoffs, even though they hit the magic mark of 96 points. However, the only point they were above the black line was after game #3. They spent 80 out of 82 games below the black line, 1 game at 0.488 points above the black line, and 1 game (#82) at the black line.

The furthest a playoff team was below the black line was Philadelphia being 7.439 points after game #26. Colorado was 5.610 points below it after game #27, Pittsburgh was 6.171 points below after game #42, and Columbus was 7.098 points below after game #65. Florida was 11.024 points below after game #47, but as noted, didn't make the playoffs with 96 points.

All playoff teams except for Colorado finished above the black line. All non playoff teams except for Florida finished below the black line.

Of the non playoff teams, Buffalo and Arizona were the only two to spend the entire season below the black line. Edmonton and Montreal both spent the first game of the season above it, and then went below for the remaining 81 games. The most games spent above the black line for a non playoff team was by St. Louis. They spent 66 games above the black line, including the first 61, with the latest being after game #78. They finished 2 points below it.

With three straight wins the red snake is now 1.244 points above the black line, 2 points above the purple snake, and 1 point below the orange snake. If Calgary wins on Friday the red snake will be above the orange snake for the first time since the end of game #15. It would also guarantee the red snake would spend at least four consecutive games above the black line, matching the season high from the conclusion of games 14-17.

After 24 games the red snake is 0.902 points above the black line, 2 points above the purple snake, and 1 point below the orange snake. It is on pace for 99 points. A record of 33-24-1 (0.578 point percentage) in the remaining 58 games would give the red snake 96 points.

Only one of the Western Canadian snakes is above the black line. The blue snake could climb above the black line with 5 straight wins, while the green snake needs 9 straight wins.

So after 24 games, our point total is what it was after 25 games last year.

Certainly a big difference in how the team got there in comparing the 2 seasons, but also kind of a sobering reminder too. Just need to keep playing like this and can’t have goaltending fall off a cliff.

Keep in mind the team was on track until late January to make a strong bid for 2nd in a more competitive Pacific. They were having a decent season until Smith, Monahan then Tkachuk went down. So they are again having a decent season to this point (though with a better roster playing more exciting hockey). But the 82 games are a marathon and even an exceptional November isn't going to guarantee them anything. They have to just keep it going.

After 24 games this season the Flames point total is what it was after 27 games last year. If the red snake keeps pace with the orange snake for the next 3 games, it will be 6 points up on the purple snake, as purple doesn't gain a point until it wins games #28.

Smith would have to fall upwards this season.

This is part of the story. Not the whole story.

After 25 games last season the Flames had scored 71 goals and allowed 76 (minus-5). They ranked #20 in scoring, and #20 in goals-against.

This year's team has scored 81 goals and allowed 68 (plus-13). They rank #6 in scoring and #19 in goals-against.

The records may be similar, but there is a world of difference between the 2017-18 vintage and the current edition of the Flames.

And last year they rode stellar goaltending to that record. This year their record is, if anything, despite the goaltending.

Huh. I certainly hadn't though of that. I like that idea. And what do you suggest we do with the 20 games after that? And then the final 20? Should we watch them? I'm confused.

Not only that, they're much more fun to watch and cheer for!
