Fans have noticed Hamonic’s peewee level gap control all season. I don’t know how he’s made it this far in the NHL playing the way he does. It is absolutely infuriating watching him wait at the red line when he should be pinching and when he’s damn near at the top of the circles when the puck gets carried in.
He is just fundamentally wrong when defending transition and I think he’s been the single biggest problem with the team (Janko and Neal being negative impact players being the other one). The coaches have at least realized that Neal is a problem so I hope that they will realize before it is too late that Hamonic is the next one they need to address. Hamonic has the skating and stick skills to be aggressive but just doesn’t, so it should be an easy fix, he just needs to be told. It’s obviously too late for him to develop any confidence doing it but he will have to try. It sucks because he is an excellent dude but he needs to start helping the team win.
