Tkachuk - Monahan - Lindholm
Gaudreau - Bennett - Mangiapane

Now there's a top-six.

Who's playing with Backlund in this case, assuming Frolik's still a cap dump and Ryan's still 4C?

Jankowski - Backlund - Dube maybe? But I wanna see Dube get reps down the middle.

Neal maybe? Maybe Neal would be a better fit than Mangiapane on that second line. I still want to see him with Gaudreau for a bit.

Neal can't play with Backlund or Gaudreau because he's a defensive liability. Case in point Game 4 overtime.

Gaudreau Monahan Tkachuk
[?] Lindholm Bennett
Mangiapane Ryan Neal
Dube Jankowski Czarnik

Gaudreau Monahan Neal
Tkachuk Lindholm Bennett
Mangiapane Ryan [?]
Dube Jankowski Czarnik

It doesn’t matter how I look at the lineup, I just can’t help thinking that moving Backlund for a winger makes more sense than moving Brodie.

I like keeping Gaudreau and Tkachuk on separate lines mainly because they are both such great playmakers. I think you can get the most out of them by putting them each on a line with two finishers.

I also think that if Neal comes to camp healthy and in great shape, they should give him a chance to slot in on the 2nd line. Nurture a rebound season from the onset. His shooting percentage was so off last season that I can't help but think he rebounds if given the ice-time and line mates to do it. Not to mention that he finished the season on the right trajectory. If he falters, then slide him down the line-up again.

Yeah, plus if he's not contributing as a top six guy, he's really not contributing. He doesn't have the motor for a lower role. He is a guy who, even at his best, chipped in through extended minutes.

Huh.

Bennett making room and crashing the net, Mangiapane the surprise 40 goal scorer after signing a 3x2.5 contract. Could be fun.

Line 1 takes care of itself. This is my new vote. New Era will now tell you why it's wrong.

Gaudreau - lindholm - Neal
Tkachuk - Monahan - Bennett
I will would flip Monahan and Lindholm.

That looks good though.

I like it too though I'd put Gaudreau - Bennett - Neal together on day one of training camp and tell them "Make it work or two of you are gone".

That's some quality coaching strategy right there. I'm sure NHL players would respond well to that kind of ultimatum.

Neal already knows his performance has to improve no matter who he's paired with. Bennett less so because he's showing improvement in areas of his game other than point production. His compete level is high, he's reduced his offensive zone penalties, he's laying hits, etc etc. but he still knows if he wants a spot long term in the top 6 he's going to need to put the puck in the net.

Or they could go with the season long strategy of just putting all the lines in a blender.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Bennett
Mangiapane-Ryan-Neal
Dube-Jankowski-Czarnik

Assuming Frolik is moved for picks and no free agents are signed or trades are made etc.

And yes I realize that goes beyond the top 9.

That's the exact top 9 I just posted in another thread.

I think most fans and certainly all players have a very clear idea of where their performance level is at versus where it should be. I just challenge the notion that any coach worth his salt would threaten their players that way. We are talking about the best players in the world. They know where their bread is buttered and they also well understand the implictions of long term contracts.
Saying what you would do if you were the coach is pointless internet bravado, nothing more.

Gone where?

With today’s multi millionaire pro athletes and guaranteed contracts, there’s not much you can really threaten them with.
