icon57 What's next for Jon Gillies?

He's going to get $750,000 NHL money this season regardless.

Zagidulin and Parsons need to get as much development time as possible in the A. Nick Schneider is also knocking on the door.

No team will pick him up on waivers because they'd have to carry him on the roster.

Could loan him to another organization? Trade him and eat a significant chunk of salary?

He had so much promise at one point.

Next is for him to bottom out the cost of living and invest that last year of salary well.

Guy was as blue chip as it comes. Frozen Four champion and tournament MVP. World Juniors champion. Just needed time to fill out his considerable frame. Hip issues made him change his style and then he lost confidence.

This. Goalies are 75% between the ears. He also lost a year of development to hip surgery. He's a grown man now and just needs to play and be stoked hes stopping pucks....

Gillies ****could**** be the next Binnington. A year ago St. Louis was willing to takea low pick for him.

...If only the flames won a cup with Gillies! (sorry Laurant Brisbois)

He's 25, turning 26 this year. I don't give up on goalies until they're 27ish, but there has to be a quick turnaround on his play. IF he's willing to go to the ECHL to regain his confidence, that would be best for him AND the organization. However, he may decline and force the team to keep him in the AHL. At that point, organizing a loan to another organization would make sense for everyone.

He's not getting any NHL time this year. Of that I am certain. With 3 other goalies in the minors, I don't think the Flames have the patience to re-sign him after this year. The best thing for his career may be the loan situation so he can display his skills for other teams in hopes of getting another contract. Otherwise, this might be his last year pro.

What about Europe? Can players on NHL contracts be loaned to the SEL, KHL, etc? Though Gillies might not make the cut in the top Euro leagues. Germany, Switzerland?

The problem is that he is not going to play very much in any reasonable scenario. A 3 goalie rotation in Stockton is no good. Maybe you can loan him out but would have to be a team with no goalie prospects of their one, otherwise he won’t get much PT.

ECHL might be best option and hope he accepts it, knowing it’s his best chance to still make it.

Until they can make a move for him he'll be the backup in Stockton. Zag gets the net there and Parsons heads back to the ECHL for the time being.

Loan him to an AHL team that has weakness. If opportunity presents itself, deal him for a 7th rounder/lower end prospect to help Stockton. Something along the lines when Toronto lost depth after losing mcihenny and pickard on waivers or when Vancouver lost depth and had to trade for that Czech goalie from NYR.
