I suspect they don't give #14 to anyone because they know the player would be subjected to the questions and media coverage that would surround it, including dumb tweets from Theo
So they are insulating any player from that unnecessary distraction and attention.

And Theo would weigh in of course. I loved him as a player. I think he can't stay out of the way of himself on these kind of things though.

Injuries destroyed that season.

Then ownership and Darryl destroyed the team in response. Ugly.

What may have been, if only Darryl had:

1. Replaced Keenan with himself instead of Brent - if “the best person to coach this team is me” wasn’t a lie, Darryl should’ve hired the best coach for that team.

2. Traded Dion in the summer while he’s riding a Norris nomination.

3. Re-signed Cammalleri.

4. Not pursued Bouwmeester/had a better handle on who/what Jay actually was.

I never thought of it this way, but you are so right.

Can easily picture Theo's passive aggressive comments about someone wearing his number on twitter and in the media. The guy needs to get a grip.

Why should Nieuwendyk be retired or honoured?

He left the team as an RFA over a contract dispute.

The only numbers that should be retired IMO are #9 and #12.

To me it should just be #2, #9, #12. #9 is a bit of a weak candidate, but it's hard to argue his impact to club and city.

Kipper was fantastic, but I think a Vezina win doesn't auto get your number retired.

Well, he did switch to 18 when Marleau arrived, which is available here.

I hope he picks something totally out of left field, like 95.

But in my opinion, a jersey retirement is reserved for generational or near-generational players.

You needn’t worry though, #9 is officially retired.
“Generational” relating to hockey or just to Calgary?

Flames’ “generationals”: McDonald => Iginla => Giordano => Tkachuk(?)
Hockey “generationals”: Iginla(?)

Retirements are about the player’s impact to the club, not to hockey.

Nobody gives up 19 unless they're a nobody.

I am on the fence with MacInnis. Arguably our best player in franchise history but left and became more associated to the Blues post career.

If I had my way I would retire #9 and #12 maybe #2 but then have a ring of honour that recognizes significant players that we have had or players that made an impact in the city post retirement.

Peplinski
Fleury
Conroy
Langkow
Warrener
Macoun
Otto
Vernon
Regehr
Kipper
Roberts
Nieuwendyk
Suter
Mullen
Loob
Sarich
Stajan
Brodie eventually
Backlund eventually
Darryl Sutter
Ken King
Johnson
Crisp

The only guy I would snub is Gilmour.

Does #5 get retired? If he gets to 1000 games I would say maybe?
