Let's make a deal with Ottawa -- impending firesale?
The Flames need to shake things up at forward. Ottawa needs to shake things up, in general.
Who could the Flames reasonably target from Ottawa?
Mark Stone - probably not available unless contract talks break down as he'll be an RFA after the season
Mike Hoffman - a really really good idea as he's only 28 and relatively cheap and signed through 2020, and Ottawa probably doesn't value him as highly as Stone
Matt Duchene - again, probably not available, Ottawa just got him
Bobby Ryan - why?
Derick Brassard - another intriguing option although it'd force Jankowski to be the #4 centre, but Brass is a VERY good centre who can score and play anywhere
Anyone else the Flames could target from the Sens? Zack Smith? J-G Pageau? Alex Burrows (barf)?
Personally, I think the best fit would be Hoffman.

How about we send Dave Cameron back to the Sens for a used Alexei Yashin turtleneck sweater?

I am really annoyed by the loss tonight so I am going to be that guy that says “why is this a thread”? This is a post in the trade speculation thread there is no rumor just an opinion.
Sorry I am easily irritable right now

Ferland for Hoffman straight up.
But it would have to happen now for it to make sense

I do agree that he would be a good fit, but what are we giving up?
I don't want to give up more draft picks. We've already given too many up.
That leaves roster players or prospects.
For roster players I don't see who goes back. Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Bennett, Jankowski are untouchable imo. That leaves Backlund, Ferland or Frolik for forwards who have some value. You don't want to mess with Backlund Frolik chemistry. Unless the flames are positive they can't re-sign Backlund, which I can't see happening. Then you can mention Ferland but I'm not really sure. He can bring the physical element which is great when he's on. But I think that the flames value Ferland more than any other team would, as his production isn't proven yet.
Then we work our way to defense. Giordano isn't going anywhere. We just got Hamonic so I can't see him going anywhere. Kulak has little value. Stone is a good fit here. That leaves Brodie & Hamilton who are more valuable to the flames than Hoffman would be.
Prospect wise, I'm not sure I'm comfortable giving up what they're going to want. IF they decide to firesale and let everyone go, they'll be rebuilding and be wanting picks & young prospects. We don't have enough picks, and we have some decent prospects in the system but you don't want to be trading away good young prospects if you want to build a continuously competitive team. Look at Chicago and Pittsburgh. They have their stars, and then surround them young cheap talent. Mangiapane will be good once he comes up. Klimchuk & Poirier aren't proven enough and I doubt we get anything worthwhile back, so I'd rather keep them. Then you've got Valimaki, Dube, Kylington, Andersson. I think if there's one area we can sacrifice it would be one of our young defensive prospects. So if they would do a trade 1 for 1 for Kylington or Andersson I MIGHT consider it. But then where does he slot?
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland / Hoffman
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Ferland / Hoffman / Jagr / Hathaway
Brouwer - Lazar - Ferland / Jagr / Hathaway
EXTRAS: Stajan / Hathaway / Jagr
Then
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Stone - Kulak
EXTRA: Bartkowski
Smith
Rittich
That would assume we send Freddie down which is fine.
I'm not sure how much that improves everything, not to mention you're then benching Hathaway (probably) even though he's earned a spot.

Sorry Scorp. But you just made a thread by saying let's trade with a team that won't move the players we'd want and has nothing else we would want. Am I missing something here?

The Flames have a surplus of defensive prospects
Anderson
Valimaki
Kylington
Fox
And Hamonic and Stone who are roughly worth their contracts.
So trading / promoting some combination of the defensive prospects for the right age of forward prospect makes sense.
Stone and Fox for a top 6 winger. I don't know if that fits Ottawas
Need or if Ottawa has the right winger for us but I see that kind of trade happening

Glen Gulutzan for a bag of pucks. At this point, pucks are at least useful.

The only players on Ottawa I would be remotely interested in are Stone and Karlsson. That's it.
They aren't trading either guy.

Why not Hoffman? PP specialist with a lethal one-timer who's scored 26, 29, and 27 goals the last 3 seasons.

Hoffman reminds me of LHS William Nylander. Injects the speed and skill that we are desperately lacking on this team.

I think one of the things missing in the makeup of the Flames is a championship pedigree. How many guys on this team have won the Stanley Cup or even been to the finals. Frolik, Jagr, anyone else? If they're going to make a deal I'd like to see them try to bring in some championship pedigree instead of getting more guys from bottom feeders. This team needs more championship attitude.
