Big for both teams, I think.
Arizona desperately needed cap space and for sure wanted a pick after losing their first next year.
Ottawa gets a legit top-six centre option.

The stats aren’t pretty for Stepan according to Twitter

Let me rephrase... they get a centre with top-six experience. They don't have many of those. I think he could rebound in a more offensive system, too.

Stepan is also owed only $2 mil this season and has a cap hit of $6.5mil. Another reason for the senators.

Everything about the Senators is lame.
They had Erik Karlsson for a decade and they still weren’t cool.
They’re owned by a man who makes you root for cirrhosis.
That said, they don’t have many players drawing a pay cheque who are better NHL forwards than Derek Stephan, so at least they’re trying to win more than 11 games.

Dumping that cap hit and getting a second round pick is a short term win for Arizona.

So, I guess Stepan will need to quarantine for 14 days?
I also wonder if we see a few more trades involving Canadian teams over the next few days. Try to get these players across the border in time for the first game.

This doesn’t make any sense for the sens.
Arizona desperate to dump money. Ottawa pays a premium asset for a declining player instead of taking them to the woodshed.
They want cap, they could have got loui Erikkson for free, if not get an asset for taking him on. 2 years, but $5m real cash and they keep a second rounder.
Be thankful we aren’t sens fans.

Yeah no idea why Sens are giving up a 2nd to take on a cap dump.
I actually think Stepan could bounce back, but just based on the market they shouldn’t have to pay that much.

To be fair, Stepan is better than Loui Eriksson and he plays centre. The Sens were already over the floor, so they probably thought he made their team better?

That's okay, they've got Micheal Haley. He'll be the one to save their season.

Surprised at the reaction in here.
The Senators are going to surprise this year. A decent 3-6 month rental for yes- a declining player but a decent one, in exchange for a 25% chance for a NHLer??????? You may as well make that trade today instead of March.
Seems fair to me. And remember they have 2x 2nds next year anyway (well, not anymore). Seems rational to upgrade their top 6. After their moves this offseason- they’re going to be better and challenge the likes of Toronto. They are arguably only slightly worse than Calgary actually. Yes I know this won’t be popular here but watch and just keep in mind the last time I made a prediction that everyone mocked before a season I was correct. They may finish only one spot behind Calgary if not ahead. Recall they’re bringing in a couple stud rookies and other very high quality prospects too......

You want to put your money where your mouth is on the Sens finishing above Calgary? I don't think its a Flames homer thing at all...nobody is picking the Sens to be in the top 4. They were the worst team in Canada last season and haven't improved that much.
This seems like one of those hot takes to get a rise out of people...
By all means they can finish ahead of Vancouver and Edmonton though

If I'm the Sens I'm doing everything in my power for a great chance at Owen Power this year.

I think Ottawa has some nice pieces too. It's going to come down to chemistry (they had a fair bit of turnover), defense, and goaltending. I think the latter two are pretty big question marks though.
Brady Tkachuk is a great young player and if he takes the next step (which I thin he might), they have a star forward there. If Dadonov and Galchenyuk can contribute, they are pretty good potential top 6 players. Tierney and Watson are decent depth players. After Chabot, their defense looks a little weak though.
Stepan is definitely declining, but he adds some much needed leadership to that team.
I don't expect them to be a playoff team, but I do expect them to be a pain to play.

And Brannstrom, who may very well win the Calder...
People underrate bad teams because they view the prism of next year based on last year- which is the wrong prism. Like Dino, who was one of those guys laughing at me last year right before the season started and then I was right. He won’t admit it though. It might all well come down to Matt Murray who’s lost a bit of a step though.

Galchenyuk is a non factor and living off his draft position. He is entering Lazar territory. I do agree Dadonov was a good pick and Stephan was a good add. I do think Ottawa will surprise some teams.
