The initial plan was to straight-up cancel, which would have raised a couple issues. For starters, she died while people were landing in Ottawa. Secondly, not everybody has a fun quirky story to tell. Some of the recipients were there receiving on behalf of their deceased children. To cancel it would have been understandable, but ultimately very sad for several of those who were treating the weekend more like a memorial than a celebration.
They weren't doing the official transition until the next day, so there was a time gap in there for us to slot in nicely. The event did take on a more sombre tone out of respect.
It is kinda cool to get the last of these medals with her insignia on it, can't lie about that. Had they cancelled and rescheduled with King Charles medals... meh... I wanted to one who met Paddington.
