This is the only IIHF thread I could find...
WTH is going on in the world championships? I (from USA) saw that Canada lost the first game to Latvia of all teams and had a some giggles... Then I see the USA lost to Finland, Sweden lost to Denmark.
All teams have played two games and right now, the only teams with a perfect records are German, Kazakstan, Slovakia and Russia.
The worst performance is Team Canada who is 0-2 with only one goal scored for and 7 against. Even Great Britain has scored 2 in its two losses.
what is going on in Riga??

Whatever happens, just don't change the title of the thread. It is gold.

It looks like there is a lot of parity in this tournament due to the A-listers of some of the usual hockey powers opting out this year. It's nice to see a more competetive tournament this year. It would be nice to see some of the lower tiered nations advance for a change.

I'd started a thread on the other sports section or whatever, but didn't get much for discussion. This works.
This Canada roster sure seems to lack scoring punch. Unless Mangiapane goes on a tear when he's done quarantine, not sure this team is to accomplish much. Parity be damned, haha

Canada filled their roster with basically third liners.

Still these other teams must not even have NHLers.

I think it's probably likely that these non-NHL teams at least have played with one another at some point for their respective national teams? Maybe the lack of high-end talent on the usual powerhouse teams means that the adjustment period for getting together and gelling is taking longer.

The Czechs, for example, played 9 pre tournament games.
Don’t know about other Euro countries, but likely similar.
Though Canada sent a weak team, we also played no games together.
It would be funny to be relegated and play against New Zealand and Hungary next year.

I’m assuming Dube will not be playing due to his concussion.

Well for starters the rosters for all top countries are, relatively speaking, kind of garbage as many have said
It's not just NHL'ers that mostly didn't want to go, a lot of top talent from Euro leagues have said no to this tournament. (And no one's blaming them, it takes a lot of devotion to want to play in a bubble tournament with no audience. Although apparently the covid situation in Latvia has improved a bit so there might be some audience in the stands at some point.)
I think what this lack of big name talent has done is that a lot of the "smaller" hockey countries are extremely motivated, because they know this might be a unique opportunity for success. Watching the Finland - Kazakstan game it was obvious that while Finland still had the better roster, the kazaks were playing their hearts out and were ultimately rewarded with their first win ever over Finland after a shootout. And good for them! (Kazakstan have (I think) never won two games in one tournament, and now they have two wins in their first two games.)
...buuut it's also not unusual that there's quite a few upsets in the first games of the tournament, as the "big" hockey countries don't always bother to show up these early games, while every point matters to the smaller countries who are always fighting against the threat of relegation. The number of upsets tends to go down as the tournament progresses. Pretty sure there's some hurt pride in Team Canada locker room right now for example

For the record, here's a list of (about) all NHL players in the tournament except for Canada and US. (I added the three Russians to a list someone else made, not sure if there's more additions coming.)
You could barely build one full roster with these guys
Belarus:
Yegor Sharangovich (F, Devils)
Czech:
Dominik Kubalík (F, Chicago)
Filip Zadina (F, Detroit)
Jakub Vrána (F, Detroit)
Filip Hronek (D, Detroit)
Libor Hájek (D, Rangers)
Filip Chytil (D, Rangers)
Finland:
Arttu Ruotsalainen (F, Sabres)
Olli Määttä (D, Kings)
Germany:
Tobias Rieder (F, Sabres)
Lean Bergmann (F, Sharks)
Russia:
Mikhail Grigorenko (F, Columbus)
Alexander Barabanov (F, Sharks)
Nikita Zadorov (D, Chicago)
Vladislav Gavrikov (D, Columbus)
Ivan Provorov (D, Flyers)
+ once they get there:
Vladimir Tarasenko (F, Blues)
Dmitri Orlov (D, Capitals)
Ilya Samsonov (G, Capitals)
Slovakia:
Marian Studenic (F, Devils)
Sweden:
Isac Lundeström (F, Ducks)
Rickard Rakell (F, Ducks)
Victor Olofsson (F, Sabres)
Adrian Kempe (F, Kings)
Marcus Sörensen (F, Sharks)
Switzerland:
Philipp Kurashev (F, Chicago)
Timo Meier (F, Sharks)
Nico Hischier (F, Devils)
Jonas Siegenthaler (D, Devils)
+ Reto Berra! (who isn't in the NHL any more obviously)
That leaves Norway, Kazakstan, Latvia, Italy, Britain and Denmark with no NHL players.

I also can't be the only one who was amused by this bit of hockey trivia:
Before these games, the previous record for least shots against was 7, which had happened three times. (1992 Czechoslovakia beat Switzerland 2 - 0, 2003 Finland beat Slovenia 12 - 0, and 2017 Czech Republic beat Belarus 6 - 1).
Switzerland just shattered that record by holding Denmark to just four shots on goal, giving Reto Berra what must be one of the easiest shutouts in all of hockey history. Switzerland won the game just 1-0 though
