Great tablets. I've got the Fire HD 8 and it is awesome value for the price.

The Fire HD 10 with special offers for $99 USD on Black Friday which is amazing value when you compare it to an iPad.

Hope Amazon Canada has a similar deal when they finally offer the Fire HD 10

Are they comparable in performance/app support?

Fire tablets are designed as multimedia consumption devices. They are great for video, audio, some gaming, etc.

How long of a lag was it for the 7 and 8 to come up here?

The key here is SOME.

I looked at these as cheap replacements for some aging iPads in our house, but they are very restricted in terms of what games they can download and play.

If you just want something for web, facebook, netflix- these are amazing. If you want to tablet "game" per se, you are better off with a different brand IMO.

Edit: can they download Tapatalk.... that's a must for me LOL

The OS is built on Android so all Android apps should be compatible and you can get Google Play on it. There is also a way to install just stock Android if you want.

Performance wise it will be a less than an iPad but for less than a quarter of the cost what else do you expect. They are really good tablets for people who don't need very high performance.

This is a pretty fair review:

For sure. A $60 tablet isn't going to give you a great gaming experience. Just like a $200 computer won't be able to give you a high end gaming experience. You get what you pay for.

The Fire Tablets are what I call great "single use" devices. I'll have one in my kitchen for recipes, one in the bedroom for reading, one mounted to the wall as a security panel, one in the garage for watching movies.

If you just want a nice small tablet to carry in your pocket for web browsing, Facebook, NetFlix, eBooks - this is a nice cheap device for that. I know people that have these in the car for the kids.

I will also add, these tablets are pretty easy to Root and install a new ROM (or at the least, a new launcher). It looks like there are some very good ROMs out there, which might give the tablet a little more functionality that resembles a stock Android tablet.

Now we just need Google and Amazon to end their fight, a media-oriented device is less useful if you can't watch Youtube and other Google products on it.

It's easy to add the Google Play store to the Fire Tablets.

Yes, but I've heard Google will be blocking YouTube on Amazon devices starting January because Amazon refuses to sell Google products.

Don't think It applies to tablets, just the Fire TV and Echo

Thanks for this info, I've been looking for something to replace my old Nexus 7. A Fire HD 8 might just do the trick.

EDIT: Not with that display resolution. Too bad the HD 10 isn't available.

Just picked up a few as they were the deal of the day. 4 x 32GB Fire HD 8 for $320. Not a bad deal. Tablets are for the kids and for me to mess around with. Hard to complain.

Sorry, the sale was yesterday thought I said that in my original post. My bad.

I still think they are worth it at the original price.

Pretty good little tablet so far. Really happy with the purchase. Don't think you can beat it for the price

Have had the tablet for a week now and it is a pretty solid unit. For the price I think it was a great deal. The kids love them and they have everything you need.

No root or custom ROMs on the 8" version if you are into that kind of thing. Easy enough to side load Google play services etc onto it which makes it a little more useful. If it is just for media consumption, videos, books with etc I highly recommend it.
